Dental and dental hygiene students honored faculty members' excellence at the Student Government Association Teaching Awards event on April 23rd | |

From Dean Carroll Ann Trotman
This is an exciting week as we all get ready for the Convocation Ceremony tomorrow! The event takes place at the Mershon Auditorium and we are expecting more than 1,000 guests to join us as we celebrate the graduation of the DDS and Dental Hygiene Classes of 2024. These students were with us at the onset of the Covid pandemic and their experiences included some special challenges, but they came through with flying colors. Tomorrow, we celebrate their achievements and welcome them as dental professionals and our newest alumni. The news item below has a link to the “virtual” celebration, and I hope you will join us for this milestone event in the lives of our students!
Recently, we seem to have reached a new level of “busyness.” Along with graduation there have been a number of other events that are meaningful to everyone in the college. The Student Government Association Teaching Awards presentation is one example. At that gathering, the DDS and dental hygiene students recognized faculty members for their teaching excellence. There were numerous awards and recipients -- too many to name in this part of the newsletter -- but we present the winners and some photos below.
Other news includes last month’s dental and dental hygiene honor society banquet that recognized Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) and Sigma Phi Alpha inductees. New OKU members are senior dental students Olivia Barger, Austin Clyde, Sana Ghiba, Brandon Graf, Olivia Jackson, Mallory McMurray, Gabriel Militello, Kazune Pax, Matt Shafron, Sydney Sherek, Aina Weinstein and Robert Wood. At that event, the William S. Kramer Award for Excellence was presented to Nicholas Jones, and the Orville E. Russell Award of Excellence was given to Nicole Fleming. Faculty member Daniel Claman, DDS, was inducted as an OKU member, and Brian Foster, MS, PhD, was inducted as an honorary member. New Sigma Phi Alpha student members are dental hygiene seniors Macy Burchett, Brynne Chaplik, and Justin Villarreal. This year’s dental hygiene faculty inductee is Irina Novopoltseva, BSAS, MS. The honorary dental faculty member is Leonardo Nassani, DMD, MBA. Each year, these important celebrations showcase students and faculty whose efforts go above and beyond in their pursuit of excellence.
And there is more good news. Several dental hygiene students who demonstrated excellence and leadership skills recently were awarded Hummel Family Scholarships created by Mrs. Carole Hummel, a graduate of the dental hygiene Class of 1958, and her husband, the late Dr. Robert Hummel who was a 1961 graduate of Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine. This year’s scholarship recipients are Rachel Albertson, DHY 3; Suyee Chen, DHY 4; Makenna Foust, DHY 4; Yolanda Vicente Mendoza, DHY 3; Ayah Musaitif, DHY 3; and Marisol Vargas, DHY 4. They are all “first generation” college students.
A big highlight -- pediatric dentistry faculty member Kim Hammersmith, DDS, MPH, MS, recently was honored for the work she and her colleagues have done with the support of a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration. Dr. Hammersmith’s project focuses on ways to care for underserved communities and provide innovative resident training experiences. It was recognized by Ohio State as a “Program of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship.”
As you can see, our students and faculty continue to set a standard for excellence. I am proud of their many accomplishments, and I hope you will join me in giving them the kudos they deserve!

Kim Hammersmith, DDS, MPH, MS, and Colleagues Receive Award for Program of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship
Dr. Kim Hammersmith is an Associate Professor-Clinical in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry, and she is the Director of the Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry for the College of Dentistry and at Nationwide Children's Hospital. In that role, she provides instruction for pre-doctoral students and pediatric dentistry residents, while also caring directly for pediatric dental patients and supporting outreach activities in the community.
Motivated by a concern for the underserved and vulnerable pediatric populations for whom she and her colleagues provide dental care, Dr. Hammersmith submitted a proposal that was funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The project is titled "From Classroom to Clinic," and it highlights collaborations among different areas of Ohio State’s Health Sciences, including the Colleges of Dentistry and Public Health and Nationwide Children's Hospital in the effort to care for underserved communities and provide unique resident training experiences.
The project was recently recognized as a “Program of Excellence in
Engaged Scholarship,” which was presented by Ohio State’s Office of Engagement and Outreach. The award is given to projects that demonstrate excellence in community-engaged scholarship and meet the criteria of high-impact engaged scholarship.
