Doctor of Dental Surgery students stand ready to provide care for patients. | |

From Dean Carroll Ann Trotman
Around this time each year, our students and faculty compete for awards at events here in the college and at professional meetings across the country. I have a lot of good news to share about their successes!
We held our annual Research Day competition just last week. It showcases research conducted by faculty, residents, post docs, as well as dental hygiene and dental students. There are too many awards to name individually, but you will be impressed by the depth and breadth of research that is highlighted in the news item below. As a college, we are uncovering “new” knowledge that impacts researchers and patients worldwide.
At the Midwinter Meeting of the Chicago Dental Society, we had two more “big wins” by graduate students from the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry. Dr. Christian Loo, a recent graduate of the Advanced Education in Prosthodontics Program, won the prestigious Stanley D. Tylman Award for research from the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics. And Dr. Omar Moustafa, the chief resident in the Restorative - Prosthetic Division, presented his research that won the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics’ first-place prize in the Clinical Poster Award category. Drs. Loo and Moustafa competed against graduate students from across the United States and Canada.
Another item is a publication in The Journal of the American Dental Association, which is the nation’s premier dental journal. Drs. Homa Amini, Paul Casamassimo, and Beau Meyer collaborated with other health experts on an article that examines pediatric dental care and health disparities.
Other faculty achievements include Dr. Shereen Azer’s appointment as a member of the University Senate, the governing body of The Ohio State University. He joins other senate members as they advise campus leaders on key educational and academic concerns. And Drs. Dan Claman and Kyulim Lee, both pediatric dentistry faculty members, received Leadership in Education and Administration Program (LEAP) Scholarships from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and its Foundation. The LEAP program helps participants refine their teaching skills, enhance interactions with students, and gain leadership skills.
More good news is related to scholarships that help relieve our students’ debt. In the 2023-24 academic year alone, the college provided more than $1 M in scholarship support for 128 recipients. One of those scholarships, a gift from the late Dr. and Mrs. Richard C. Veler, recognizes outstanding academic merit, an interest in professional service, and exceptional character. This year’s Veler Scholar is D1 student Matthew Siefker.
Other scholarships include the Knabe Scholarship, which honors the late Dr. Robert Knabe, an alumnus of the DDS Class of 1960. Three recipients were chosen this year – Summer Jento (D1); Reagan Newton (D1); and Brett Balle (D1). And Piper Sullivan, a senior dental hygiene student, received the MouthWatch Patti DiGangi Scholarship for Dental Hygiene Innovation from the American Dental Education Association.
As you read about these success stories, you should know they are only a sample of the great efforts and accomplishments made by our students and faculty. It would take much more than one newsletter to tell you about the achievements that happen daily in the college – but that is good!
Thank you, as always, for staying connected!
