Resources are available to small businesses impacted by Hurricane Ian. The Florida SBDC at USF is encouraging businesses to seek available disaster assistance and has opened Business Recovery Centers where disaster specialists help small businesses complete state and federal disaster loan applications.

The 3rd annual Business Ethics Essay Competition is underway. This year's essay question is simply, "Why Do Business Ethics Matter?" Top essays could win up to $700 in prizes. The competition is presented by Professor Greg Smersh and funded by the USF Exide Professorship in Business Ethics.

Entrepreneurship alumna featured in Poets&Quants 


Cassidy Rose Garber’s first brush with entrepreneurship started as a side hustle. She loved music, grew up in musical theater, and hung around the bustling music scene around Florida’s Tampa Bay. Friends taught her to DJ, and she taught herself to produce her own music. Read More.

2022 Brunch on the Bay to raise scholarship funds


The 2022 Brunch on the Bay, the premier fundraising event at USF's Sarasota-Manatee campus will take place on Nov. 6. Organizers say attendees will enjoy fine cuisine prepared by local caterers and students from the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Read More.

Rays and Rowdies give career advice at showcase 


The USF Muma College of Business hosted a panel discussion featuring sports executives and personnel from the Tampa Bay Rays and the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Sept. 19. About 50 students gathered in Lynn Pippenger Hall to learn about how to break into the sports industry. Read More.

Faculty Spotlights

Jung Chul Park, an associate professor of finance and the Bank of America Professor of Finance, had two research papers accepted for publication in FT-50 journals. “A Cognitive Perspective of Real Options Investment: CEO Overconfidence,” was accepted for publication in the Strategic Management Journal, and “A Dilemma of Self-Interest vs. Ethical Responsibilities in Political Insider Trading,” was accepted for publication in the Journal of Business Ethics.


Martina Schmidt, a professor of instruction at the Kate Tiedemann School of Business and Finance, was interviewed by WalletHub for a blog post on credit cards.


Stephen Diasio, an associate professor of instruction, was quoted in the story “Under The Radar: New Pathways To Success Through South Florida’s Entrepreneurship Program” in Poets&Quants.


Delroy Hunter, the Serge Bonanni Professor of International Finance in the Kate Tiedemann School of Business and Finance, contributed an op-ed titled “Should the BOJ care about firms’ forex losses?” in The Gleaner.


Steven Currall, the former president of USF, will become a full Professor within the School of Information Systems and Management on Nov. 3 after completing a 15-month sabbatical.

 

Dipayan Biswas, the Frank Harvey Endowed Professor of Marketing in the School of Marketing and Innovation, was featured in a story in Daily Coffee News and in retailcustomerexperience.com about his research suggesting drinking coffee before shopping may lead to more purchases.

Alumni Updates

Will Daughtrey (‘05, MBA, Marketing, Management, Finance) was named vice president of merchandising for furniture retailer Gardner-White. He was previously the vice president of merchandising for Kane’s Furniture in central Florida.


Bob Batz (‘96 BS, Accounting) was promoted to senior managing director of CBIZ MHM, a leading provider of financial, insurance, and advisory services. He previously served as the MHM attest practice leader for the Tampa Bay market and a lead managing director for CBIZ.


Richard Weinstein (‘79, BA, Marketing) was appointed by the Florida governor to the College of the Florida Keys District Board of Trustees. He is the president and chief operating officer of the Ocean Reef Community Foundation and previously served as a trustee of the Incentive Research Foundation.


Ivan Gil (‘12, BS, Marketing) started a new role as the assistant vice president for marketing and digital innovation at NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. He is a former USF Muma College of Business 25 Under 25 honoree.


Jessica Senatus (‘21, BS, Business Analytics and Information Systems) is excited to share that she was promoted to senior associate at KPMG US on the new Cyber Threat Management team. She is a former USF Muma College of Business 25 Under 25 honoree.


Thalia Michaels (’15, BS, Accounting, MACC, Accounting) has a new role as an information security senior analyst in the Technology Risk and Assurance team at Raymond James Financial.

In Other News

The Florida SBDC at USF is continuing to help small businesses impacted by Hurricane Ian. The Small Business Development Center at USF, which is part of the USF Muma College of Business, opened a Business Recovery Center in Wauchula in Hardee County. The center is staffed with disaster specialists who are helping small business owners apply for disaster loan programs. More details.


Florida SBDC at USF has also opened a new location within the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce building. Read more.
