Fall Mums Welcome the Changing Season
The women's group of the FCBA keep the Courthouse planters looking beautifully seasonal by planting flowers and decorating throughout the year. In September they switched the summer flowers for fall mums.
Thanks go to Marty Walker, Barb Townsend, Brett Palmer and her daughter Ellen, who planted the mums and to David Spang who removed the summer plants.

Press Releases, Memos and Important Notices
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, through its Bureau of Farmland Preservation, is in the process of developing the Preserved Farm Resource Center to facilitate transition/succession/business planning for the Commonwealth's preserved farm owners. The goal of this initiative is to be able to provide farm owners with teams of professionals in various practice areas who can assist them in their areas of need. In furtherance of this goal, the Bureau is beginning to assemble a list of attorneys from across the state who work in farm succession/transition planning and farm estate planning and who wish to be part of this initiative.
Attorneys who express interest will become part of our database of legal professionals available to provide legal assistance to farm owners through farm transition/succession teams.
If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact me or John Howard, Assistant Counsel, at the Department of Agriculture Office of Chief Counsel: johoward@pa.gov, phone 717-705-4360 or Doug Wolfgang, Director, Bureau of Farmland Preservation, PA Department of Agriculture, (717) 783- 3167,

"Since our last chat..."
"Since our last chat..." is a periodic column in The Causeway by Bar member Barb Townsend. This month's article is by Kristen Hamilton.
I got curious and decided to attempt to interview G. Bryan Salzmann, Esq., of Salzmann Hughes, P.C. Fortunately he had some time for me and we sat down for a chat.
Bryan is from the Sunbury/Shamokin area in Northumberland County where he attended Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School in Coal Township. Fortunately, his father was a veterinarian. Bryan had his eye on a classmate that he wanted to date. As was customary at the time and place in the early 80's, he went to the young lady's father to ask permission to date her. Unfortunately, Mr. Durant said no, because Bryan Salzmann was not from coal country, and failed to have a local last name. Later, Mr. Durant took his white German shepherd for a health reason to his favorite veterinarian. During the exam of the dog, it occurred to Bryan's father-in-law-to-be to inquire whether the veterinarian by chance had a son who attended Our Lady of Lourdes. Once reassured that Bryan was in deed the child of an appropriate father, Mr. Durant advised Bryan that he'd changed his mind and, as the two were attending the same high school, Bryan could in fact date Susan. The high school sweethearts married in August, 1990, are the parents of six children and recently celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversary.
Bryan loved to play basketball. During high school, by preserving, he was able to remain on the varsity, although not particularly tall. Our Lady of Lourdes basketball team won the AA district basketball championship during Bryan's senior year. Bryan is a ringer on a three point shot.
Trading on his love for basketball, Bryan went on to the University of Scranton. There he continued his hoops career while managing to secure a degree in Philosophy and Management. Bryan said he was deeply interested in theology and considered the priesthood. The secular appeal was too strong, however. He proudly related how the basketball team were in Division III national championship game, losing only to Ohio Wesleyan in the tournament finals, during his tenure. Bryan graduated in 1988, and considered staying for a master's degree as he still had a year of eligibility. Dickinson School of Law was Plan B.
Plan B won. Bryan met Jim Hughes in law school. One day, Dean Harvey Feldman called Bryan out of class and asked if he golfed. Of course, he acknowledged he was familiar with the sport, so Bryan was enlisted as the final addition to a foursome. Bryan enjoyed his round with the dean, a professor and Jim. It wasn't until later that he learned that Jim Hughes was a professional golfer. That revelation came after Bryan told Jim not to bother to make suggestions, Bryan had a handle on his game....Bryan admits that he finished the round one over, and Jim, the Hughes in Salzmann Hughes, finished at seven under.
After law school, Bryan began working in tort law, but his love for environmental issues led him to earn his masters degree at Shippensburg University in 1994. Bryan has a keen interest in land use and municipal issues, balancing the needs of people with nature. He and Jim started their firm in 1995. Because the firm continues to grow and Bryan realized he could not both practice and manage, he's hired a firm manager. His firm now is home to Eileen Finucane, Esq., Nancy Meyers, Esq., Steve Patterson, Esq., and Adam Schellhase, Esq., as well as some relatively newer to Franklin County attorneys, L. Rebecca Ables, Esq., Stephen T. Coccorese, Esq., Ann DePaulis, Esq., Jason E. Kelso, Esq., his wife, Melissa L. Kelso, Esq., (a coal region girl), and Samuel E. Wiser, Jr., Esq. I hope to catch up to at least some of these members of our bar soon. Of course, there are other attorneys in Bryan's firm who concentrate their practice in Cumberland and Dauphin Counties.
