Saint of the Day — St. Saint Aloysius Gonzaga
Image: The Vocation of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga | Guercino
The Lord can make saints anywhere, even amid the brutality and license of Renaissance life. Florence was the “mother of piety” for Aloysius Gonzaga despite his exposure to a “society of fraud, dagger, poison, and lust.” As a son of a princely family, he grew up in royal courts and army camps. His father wanted Aloysius to be a military hero.

Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS
| | The Church must see secularization as an opportunity for renewal and evangelization through a more authentic faith. As Teacher and Mother, the Church calls for a new evangelization that reaches out to those who have become indifferent or hostile to religion. “The commemoration of the half millennium of evangelization,” said St. John Paul II, “will have its full significance if it is your commitment as bishops, together with your presbytery and faithful, not of re-evangelization, but of a new evangelization; new in its ardor, in its methods, in its expression.” The present situation is much like the Tower of Babel, where everyone distrusts everyone else and the frustration of our natural desire to communicate becomes exasperating. We seem to be left with no alternative, but to commit to using a deeper and more meaningful language, which everyone can understand. We must work for a renewed Church that is more focused on evangelization, mission, and serving the poor. No one can resist the joy that comes from having encountered Christ. The Lord is the source of our zeal to share this joy with others.

Day of Reflection for Criminal Justice Ministers | Saturday, June 29
Christians have a long history of moving beyond personal and collective trauma to find hope and compassion in Jesus. As prison volunteers, we must develop a greater awareness of resilience’s nature, its biblical roots, and ways to access its dynamism as a profound spiritual and religious reality. This will enable us to assist our brothers and sisters to become more resilient Christians. The archdiocese invites volunteers in Criminal Justice Ministry to join us for this free Day of Reflection featuring our keynote speaker Father Daniel Renaud, OMI, and testimonies from the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.

Flag Day at Catholic Life Insurance
Photo: Veronica Markland for Catholic Television of San Antonio | A Catholic Life Insurance tradition dating back to 1993, the Flag Day celebration is an annual tradition commemorating the adoption of the United States flag, instituted in 1777. This year’s gathering was held June 14 at the Catholic Life Insurance headquarters building. The event reminded everyone of the price of freedom, while paying tribute to the nation, heroes –veterans, and all who died serving this country. To coincide with the event, Catholic Life Insurance sponsored a Flag Day poster and video content, and the Girl Scouts commemorative Flag Day patch contest, which is open to youths ages 5 to 18. This year’s theme was “Celebrating America’s Heroes.” Presentation took place, followed by a catered picnic lunch and live music.
SWBC partnered with the Catholic Charities St. Stephen’s CARE Center on June 14 to stock the food pantry and clothes closet as part of their annual United Way giving campaign. Partners ensure that Catholic Charities has the resources and support to offer assistance so that volunteers can prepare to serve and welcome each and every neighbor in need with a smile.
