Prayer of the Week

For the gift of sufficient rain in Texas to end the drought, especially for those most impacted by water shortage, and for the wisdom and charity to be good stewards of this precious gift.

Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

Most Rev. Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

Jesus Himself will serve us. He nurtures us with life-giving food. Already in this earthly life, the Lord Jesus is given to us in the Eucharist, as a pledge of eternal blessedness. We already participate in his glory. We can ask ourselves: what prevents me from keeping an attitude of joyful expectation? What is it that helps me keep my lamp on? Let us remain hopeful and ready for the Lord’s surprises in our lives. Let us respond to his invitation with an attitude that says: Here I am, Lord! I pray that we all become brighter lights, showing the light of Christ to the world. May we remain aware that as we serve God’s children, we are serving God Himself. Christ is truly present in those who can benefit from our works of mercy.

XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops to the People of God

Participants in the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops have approved a Letter to the People of God giving thanks for their experience. The first assembly is set to conclude on Oct. 29 and will resume in October 2024. They pray for everyone "concretely participate in the dynamism of missionary communion indicated by the word 'synod'".

Among several reflections the letter, available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese Polish, and Swahili, expresses:

We want to thank God with all of you for the beautiful and enriching experience we have lived. We lived this blessed time in profound communion with all of you. We were supported by your prayers, bearing with you your expectations, your questions, as well as your fears.

For the first time, at Pope Francis’ invitation, men and women have been invited, in virtue of their baptism, to sit at the same table to take part, not only in the discussions, but also in the voting process of this Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. Together, in the complementarity of our vocations, our charisms and our ministries, we have listened intensely to the Word of God and the experience of others.

Day by day, we felt the pressing call to pastoral and missionary conversion. For the Church’s vocation is to proclaim the Gospel not by focusing on itself, but by placing itself at the service of the infinite love with which God loved the world (cf. John 3:16). When homeless people near St. Peter’s Square were asked about their expectations regarding the Church on the occasion of this synod, they replied: “Love!”. This love must always remain the ardent heart of the Church, a Trinitarian and Eucharistic love, as the Pope recalled on October 15, midway through our assembly, invoking the message of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus. It is “trust” that gives us the audacity and inner freedom that we experienced, not hesitating to freely and humbly express our convergences, differences, desires and questions.

Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the Holy Land, Pope Francis has called for a day of prayer and fasting on Friday, October 27. At the end of his general audience on October 18, Pope Francis said the 27th will be “a day of penance to which I invite sisters and brothers of the various Christian denominations, those belonging to other religions, and all those who have at heart the cause of peace in the world, to join in as they see fit.” Watch the CNS video: Pope: War is always a defeat. Read the letter from Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, to his entire diocese. There are many ways to participate in this day of prayer and fasting for peace.

Archdiocesan Eucharistic Congress 2023

A “Moment of Encounter” is another name for a breakout session. So, why don’t we just call it a breakout session? Because these moments are more than that. They are transformative moments where we encounter Jesus in a new way. What does it mean to encounter Jesus? Jesus invites all of us to have a personal relationship with Him. Encounter is about entering into this relationship through real, authentic experiences and recognizing His presence in our lives and in others. Join thousands of Catholics at St. Mary’s University on November 4 at 8:00 AM for the Archdiocesan Eucharistic Congress to experience a Moment of Encounter related to service, family life, liturgy, or holiness, designed to help you encounter Christ IN others and WITH others in Eucharistic celebration!
