Saint of the Day - Saint Paschal Baylon

drawing-of-saint-paschal-baylon image

In Paschal’s lifetime the Spanish empire in the New World was at the height of its power, though France and England were soon to reduce its influence. The 16th century has been called the Golden Age of the Church in Spain, for it gave birth to Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Peter of Alcantara, Francis Solano, and Salvator of Horta.

Friday of the Seventh Week of Easter | Viernes de la VII semana de Pascua

Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

Most Rev. Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

The upcoming solemnity of Pentecost reminds us of the Holy Spirit’s transformative power within us. Pope Francis reminds us that we cannot be courageous on our own. We need the gifts of the Holy Spirit: “frankness, courage… a grace that the Holy Spirit gives on the day of Pentecost.” Let us open our hearts to receive these great gifts and allow them to move us to greater service and deeper faith. As we reflect on the examples of St. Paul and St. Peter, let us ask ourselves: Do our actions reflect the love of Christ? And are we willing to follow Him, even in the face of adversity? May Our Lady of Guadalupe help us make of our lives a continual response to God’s love, as we journey together in faith and service.

Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, invites you to celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost at the Church of the Holy Spirit on May 18 at 5 p.m. Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Mary and the Apostles — a feast often referred to as the birthday of the Church. In preparation of this celebration, we invite you to pray the Pentecost Novena from May 10–18. The Pentecost Novena comes from chapter 1 of the Book of Acts where Mary and the Apostles pray continuously for nine consecutive days after Christ’s ascension into heaven. On the 10th day, the Holy Spirit descended upon them.
