"Work is fundamental to the dignity of a person. Work, to use an image, 'anoints' us with dignity, fills us with dignity, makes us similar to God, who has worked and still works, who always acts..."
- Pope Francis, Feast of St. Joseph the Worker and World Labor Day, 5/1/13

Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS
|
In our modern world, families face numerous challenges that can pull us away from our commitment to God. The culture around us often offers tempting alternatives, leading to materialism, vanity, and pleasure for its own sake. We are tempted to serve these false gods instead. The decision to serve the Lord is not a one-time event but a continuous commitment. In this journey, our families play a crucial role. The family is the first place where faith is nurtured, where the decision to serve the Lord is lived out daily. The family is where the world begins to change as the People of God is edified. But let us not forget that even if we falter in our commitment, the Lord remains steadfast. He continues to offer Himself for us in the Eucharist, inviting us to return to Him. The Eucharist is a powerful reminder of Christ’s unwavering love and the life He offers us. Let us ask Our Lady of Guadalupe to help us renew our commitment to serve the Lord with our whole heart.

The 23rd of August commemorates the anniversary of the Feast Day of St. Rose of Lima. On that day, CHRISTUS Children’s Hospital celebrated with a Mass at which Father Carlos Velázquez, rector of San Fernando Cathedral, presided; crowning of a statue of St. Rose; treats, activity kits for children; and a Peruvian food menu in the cafeteria. “St. Rose gave up everything to devote herself to a life of healing, compassion and advocacy by the help of her prayers, may we continue to seek to use resources to aid in healing, alleviate suffering and advocate for those in need. May we ever continue to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ,” stated the hospital.
St. Mary’s University students, faculty, staff and alumni volunteered across San Antonio on August 24, for Continuing the Heritage - the longstanding event during which the St. Mary’s community serves at partnering nonprofits throughout the city. The day of service happens at the beginning of each academic year. It brings together volunteers for projects, such as sorting and packing produce and household items for distribution, organizing books for kids, cleaning up graffiti and working hands-on with animals. Volunteers helped revitalize community gardens, which provide fresh, organic produce to those in need. The event drew about 400 volunteers. They met at the St. Mary’s University Flex Field for an opening ceremony, which included breakfast and prayer. From 9 a.m. until noon, volunteers served at several sites. Since 1997, 24,547 volunteers have offered more than 66,681 hours to organizations that provide much-needed services throughout the area. It is estimated that those volunteer hours would have equated to an economic impact of more than $2 million.
