A Note From the Emily...

Hey everyone,

My youngest child is 8 years old, and I confess that we treat him differently than we do the older two. When our oldest was 8 years old and the second kiddo was 6, I’m pretty sure we were still sitting together in the evenings and reading together each evening. The youngest has an e-reader (specifically a Kobo, if you’re curious) and we tuck him under the covers with an entire world of books at his fingertips and let him read until his eyes get heavy and he falls asleep.

Recently, though, he’s been asking more frequently (like almost everyday) for a ride to school. In general, this is easy enough for me to do; my office is only a few minutes from his school and dropping him off actually gets me there a little bit earlier than usual. I was trying to figure out the uptick in the requests, and I think it has to do with our newly-established drive-to-school ritual. We’ve been listening to audiobooks.

I love to listen to audiobooks and I recently was listening to The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty. I had it on the car as we were driving to school and my 8yo was enthralled. This is a great middle grade novel (Do I read YA and middle grade novels for pleasure on my own? Yep, I do. Especially when the characters are neurodivergent!) and I’m realizing that this is a way for us to share that time making up for the other times we are too busy with all the things.

Anyway, cheers to accidentally finding the small moments to connect with our kids that we may not have realized were there.

Neurodivergently yours,

As we wrap up 2023, we are presenting a series of episodes called Perspectives, and on episode 204 we talk about ADHD. The experience of being an ADHDer influences people throughout their lifetime. Whether it is understanding the experience of children, or reconciling a diagnosis as an adult, we know that the needs of ADHDers don’t go away - they just change.

The Neurodiversity Podcast

Preferred registration deadline: February 9th

This workshop will be conducted in a virtual Zoom meeting format.

3 CEU/CPH units

Neurodivergence is a term used to explain the unique ways people’s brains work. Neurodivergent individuals may experience differences in how they interpret, experience, and digest the world around them. This workshop aims to equip mental health clinicians with the latest knowledge and tools to better understand and support neurodivergent clients with diagnoses like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others.

We will provide an in-depth analysis of the neurodiversity movement and its implications for mental health practice. We will address the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals, the strengths and talents they possess, and evidence-based strategies for supporting their mental health and well-being. This workshop will promote a strengths-based approach to promote inclusion and equality for neurodiverse individuals in all aspects of life.

This workshop meets the Missouri & Illinois social work licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in diversity/cultural competency/humility.

General Admission: $60**

Class size is limited to 40.
