Brendan Toohey Award Breakfast Recap
On Sunday, February 26th, we hosted the annual Westchester-Putnam Conference's Brendan Toohey Award Breakfast. This award is
presented annually to a brother who exemplifies
Knighthood in our Order. This year's worthy winner was our friend and former District Deputy, Ken Chambers. Pictured here is Westchester-Putnam Conference Chairman Mike Griffin (far left) presenting the award to Ken as Conference officers look on.
The day began with Mass at Our Lady of the Lake/Mt. Carmel Church. Thanks to Color Corps Commander Mike O'Brien for leading the honor guard from Mother Cabrini Assembly at the Mass. We then served a full breakfast buffet at our council, followed by the award ceremony.
We were also honored to have guest speakers from a local charitable organization,
CAREERS for People with Disabilities
(recently renamed CAREERS Support Solutions), who spoke about the incredible work they do for the disabled in our community. Our breakfast raised $850 for this very worthy cause. Pictured below are members of our Ladies Auxiliary, who did a great job serving the breakfast, along with CAREERS' spokesperson Christine Chenevey (blue jacket) and client Jessica Ekback (far right).

Midnight Run: Help our Ladies Help the Homeless!
A reminder that our Ladies Auxiliary is sponsoring a "Midnight Run" in conjunction with Immaculate High School in Danbury, Connecticut, to collect and deliver food, clothing and toiletries to the homeless in New York City.
Midnight Run is an organization based out of Dobbs Ferry that has been delivering food, clothing and toiletries to the homeless in New York City for more than 25 years. About 5 to 6 times per year, a group of students and chaperones from Immaculate, a Catholic high school, go to the city on a Friday night to deliver food and clothing to the homeless at several locations. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to serve and interact with many homeless men and women. Students meet at the school around 6 p.m. on the night of the run, where they sort clothing, prepare the food, and make bags of toiletries. They leave for Manhattan at 8:30 and return to the school around 1 a.m.
New items needed:
- Men’s underwear, socks and long underwear
- Ladies' underwear
Gently used items:
- Men’s pants and sweatpants, T-shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts and hoodies
(most popular), coats, dress shirts, and footwear
- Women’s pants and coats
- Blankets, sleeping bags, and backpacks
- Jackets, gloves, scarves, and hats
The Midnight Run takes place on Friday, March 31st, so please get in your donation before then. Look for the donation bins in our lounge. Monetary donations are also needed, as the trips are fully funded by generous donations from Immaculate families, alumni, local businesses, and charitable organizations like ours.
Your donation -- large or small -- will be greatly appreciated. Please help in any way you can!

- Thanks to everybody who supported our brothers in Mahopac Council in their efforts to raise funds for the Sullivan-Birmingham family, who suffered a devastating fire that took the life of Elizabeth Birmingham. The council's spaghetti dinner fundraiser on February 19th was a success, and was much appreciated by the family. Our council had a good number of members who attended the dinner, and we also donated several trays of homemade baked ziti and meatballs. #Unity!
You may still help the family directly by clicking here and making a donation on the family's GoFundMe relief fund page.
- Why no Fish Fry on Friday, March 17th? Because it is St. Patrick's Day! Thanks to a dispensation from His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Catholics in the Archdiocese of New York do not need to abstain from meat that Friday. (We are, however, asked do an extra act of charity or penance in exchange for eating meat.) So that evening our lounge will be open and we'll be serving corned beef sandwiches for $5.
- A special note of deep gratitude from our Grand Knight to the council officers, corporation directors, and all of our volunteers who have been working so hard behind the scenes to maintain and improve our building and grounds. Some of that work is apparent to the casual observer, but much of it goes unnoticed. For example, our kitchen is in the midst of a significant renovation that will improve our ability to cater most our events in-house, which in turn allows us to raise more money for charities, community organizations, and people in need. As stated at the start of this newsletter, nothing happens at our council without the support of our members. We are already doing great things thanks to an excellent group of hard working volunteers and members who turn out for our events. But just think of how much more we could do if even only a few more brothers pitched in to help with projects and staffing those council events. Food for thought.
