Hey, everyone!
Have you ever noticed that things that seem like they should be simple seem to be so much harder for neurodivergent people?
| |
|
Take getting in the shower, for example. This seems like it should be a part of the routine, but if your house is anything like ours, it is a constant negotiation. Coupled with the conversation about when the last bath/shower/hose-off was and whether or not the time between justifies and entire shower - - it is all so exhausting.
Why might these things be so tricky for neurodivergent people?

Executive functioning difficulties are one source. Think of all the executive functioning skills that go into a seemingly simple task:
-
Task initiation: You have to start doing the thing.
- Time estimation: How long is it even going to take?
- Transitioning focus: I have to stop this (probably enjoyable) thing and do that (meh) thing.
-
Planning: Do I have everything I need for this task? (Okay, confession - maybe it is just my kids, but the frequency with which they go to take a shower without a towel in the bathroom because they’ve left it on the floor of their room is mind boggling to me.)
And that’s just a few of the executive functioning factors.
Some others factors:
- Sensory sensitivities: Lots of sensory needs can be triggered by a “simple” shower.
- Hyperactivity: Showering is pretty boring for a mind that seeks stimulation.
- Demands: Personal hygiene is essentially a demand; where’s the autonomy?
- Social awareness: Some people just don’t see the point and don’t understand or care what others may or may not think about them related to their hygiene.
If you or your neurodivergent loved one is struggling with something like this, try to break down the task and find the exact areas that are causing the difficulty, and then try to find a solution for that particular factor. There are so many possible barriers and there is never a single panacea.
And, as always, may the odds be ever in your favor.

Today we’re tackling the challenge of decoding ADHD in children. Emily Kircher-Morris chats with Drs. Yael Rothman and Katia Fredriksen about the cultural and socioeconomic factors that influence the diagnosis, the disparities in diagnosis rates among different racial and ethnic groups, and the impact of stigma. They also explore the benefits of early diagnosis and intervention, and of recognizing and leveraging the strengths often inherent in ADHD. They touch on a host of other subjects as well, on episode 223.

Just because a child is gifted doesn't mean they don't have other types of neurodivergence, like ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and more. Conversely, even children with one of these diagnoses can be cognitively gifted. Raising Twice-Exceptional Children provides you with a road map to understand the complex make-up of your "gifted-plus," or twice-exceptional, child or teen.
The book helps you understand your child's diagnosis, meet their social-emotional needs, build self-regulation skills and goal setting, and teach self-advocacy. It also shows you effective ways to collaborate with teachers and school staff, and it offers advice on finding strengths-based strategies that support development at home.
For too long, these kids have fallen through the cracks. This book provides key information on how to best support neurodivergent children by leveraging their strengths while supporting their struggles.
