The Forest Hills Global Elementary School Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) program was implemented at the beginning of 2022.  The program is situated in one of the state's fastest-growing areas surrounding Wilmington, NC.   Our goal was to create a language-rich environment in a deaf-school-like classroom where all academic subjects and social activities are conducted with a group of DHH students having full access to a language.  The primary instruction and communication modes are American Sign Language (ASL) and English.  Both oral and signing students benefit from our bilingual environment.  We have had success with students who have shown, on average, 1.5 years of growth each year in reading and math in the last three years.  We went from having two students to eight students by year three.  We hope to expand our program and create similar DHH programs at the middle and high school levels.  If you want to learn more about our program, please contact me at michael.lupo@nhcs.net.
