Sgt. Eddie Marlowe with Long View Police Department and Interpreter Adaie Young with North Carolina School for the Deaf (Morganton, North Carolina) hosted both Beginners and Intermediate Level American Sign Language Classes during November 2021 at Open DoorBaptist Church (Long View, North Carolina).
During the classes, Law Enforcement Officers from Hickory Police Department and Newton Police Department attended the classes to learn how to use sign language to communicate with Deaf People in our community and also learn about Deaf Culture. It is important that law enforcement officers are able to communicate with deaf citizens in the community during emergency and non-emergency situations and to know what equipment they use as well for communication.
Sam Moss (Deaf Citizen) and Jimmy Autrey (Deaf Citizen) attended a couple of the classes to interact with the Law Enforcement Officers in live law enforcement related scenarios so the Law Enforcement Officers would have first hand experience with communicating with a deaf person on their own and with the assistance of an Sign Language Interpreter.
