Reminder:
The Monthly will be paused for July, August, and September, and will resume in October.
During this hiatus, announcements can be submitted for distribution to the Chair's Office.

Department Update: We thank you for your feedback from our small group discussions, one-on-ones, division meetings, culture workshops, chair survey, and hallway conversations. We have heard the interest in additional faculty meetings.
To facilitate closure on some of our ongoing projects such as the incentive plan discussions and culture workshop findings, and to address comments sent to the anonymous Topic/Question Survey, we will hold an in-person department update in lieu of grand rounds on July 17, 2024 at 7am in D1.600. We encourage you to attend and look forward to interacting with you.
Chair Survey: I am grateful for your feedback on the chair survey. It is helpful to receive clarity on what is working, what is not working, and other opportunities. One theme is an interest in greater interaction in addition to the Coffee with the Chair, division meetings, one-on-ones, and hallway conversations. We will schedule Department Updates quarterly along with a State of the Department this winter.
Another common theme is related to extra shift compensation. We have revised the extra shift compensation policy to address compensation for emergency full OR/L&D days. I appreciate the opportunity to know what matters to you and work with you to address these items.
Maternal Levels of Care: Kudos to the Clements University Hospital team and maternal medical director, Dr. Jamie Morgan, for completing the Maternal Levels of Care survey May 20-21. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the clinical care and outcomes on our service. The preparation was so evident the survey ended early with no deficiencies and strengths which were too numerous to count. The surveyors provided some recommendations of opportunities which will further enhance our work and we are grateful for their expertise.
POB2 Renovations: As we have discussed, we are working to increase our clinical space on campus. Thank you to all who have been involved in the planning of the renovation of our POB2 space.
Due to the need to increase clinical space, academic offices in POB2 will be renovated into clinical space. As a result, faculty who currently have academic offices in our POB2 space will now have the option to have a either an office on campus or a home office.
If a faculty member chooses an on-campus office space, it may be in South Campus or in Sprague. The Sprague office suite is directly connected to the Parkland bridge. If faculty would prefer not to have a physical office on campus, we can provide equipment for a home office (which includes a laptop, and if needed, a monitor, keyboard, and docking station). Please let your administrative staff know your preferences.
Also, for any faculty who are predominantly at Parkland and prefer an office with ready access to Parkland in Sprague, please let us know.
We will begin a weekly email to communicate updates about the renovation during this transition. Since the renovation does not impact all faculty, we will limit the distribution to those who are impacted. However, if you want to be included on these communications, please let us know. We are happy to include all who have interest in this project.
Incentive plan: Dr. Vanessa Rogers and Dr. Jaya Lea have led a number of discussion sessions regarding potential options for the FY25 incentive plan. We appreciate all of you who participated and provided input. It has been more difficult than anticipated. We will discuss the progress at the aforementioned Department Update on July 17th
Office of Faculty Development Modules: Feedback for our trainees is vital to their success. The Office of Faculty Development has created ten modules which are available on TaleoLearn. One topic focuses specifically on feedback; others include assessment, learning in ambulatory practice, letters of recommendation, and teaching professionalism and communication.
To access these training modules in TaleoLearn, type in "EDU" in the "Find a Learning" search, and click on the top result, “Faculty Development EDU 2024.”
Anonymous Topics/Question Survey: We received two comments in the anonymous Topics/Question Survey form related to PACT recipients and Parkland Gyn call.
- PACT recipients: A concern was raised regarding the lack of faculty PACT card recipients with a request to increase the number of faculty PACT cards for those working at Parkland. Thank you for this suggestion. The Faculty Wellness Committee has also identified recognizing gratitude via PACT cards for all faculty as an opportunity and has developed a system to facilitate this. To recognize a faculty member, email facdevvicechair@utsouthwestern.edu with who you want to recognize and why and the Wellness Committee will complete a PACT card for you to facilitate the deserved recognition. We encourage this for all faculty.
- Parkland GYN call: The concept of Parkland Gynecology faculty moving to home call was not discussed at the Generalist meeting and this was identified as an opportunity to ensure all viewpoints are considered. We hear this opportunity and Dr. Schaffer is looking forward to meeting with the Generalist Division to discuss.
Department Visit: The Provosts and senior leadership will visit with us on Tuesday, October 8th from 3-5pm in the Gooch Auditorium. We will send a calendar invite to your calendars with the hopes you can attend.
We are open to your ideas and have created an anonymous Topics/Question Survey so that you all can provide feedback. Please feel free to share your ideas and thoughts. It is recommended to bookmark this link for convenience, but it will also appear in all following editions of The Monthly moving forward.

CenterTimes Story: A New Kidney and Unexpected Baby
In 2007, a chronic kidney disease diagnosis led to a challenging journey for Maureen Silvestre. Pregnancy was considered risky due to the disease. Despite losing her first child, Hans, she received exceptional care at UT Southwestern. A successful kidney transplant from an anonymous donor restored her health. A second pregnancy, termed a “rainbow baby,” brought joy back into the Silvestres’ lives.

Children’s Health and UT Southwestern receive $100 million donation from the Pogue family for new $5 billion Dallas pediatric campus
Children's Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center announced a historic gift of $100 million from the Jean and Mack Pogue family in support of the $5 billion transformative new Dallas pediatric campus, unveiled earlier this year.
The gift from the Pogue Foundation is one of only four $100 million philanthropic gifts ever publicly announced in North Texas, and it is the largest donation yet to the new pediatric campus project, which will replace the existing Children’s Medical Center Dallas.

Virtual Maternal Health Seminar at Tarleton State University
On behalf of Tarleton State University, the residents of Hood, Erath, and Parker counties, and Accel Health:
"I would like to thank Dr. Anne Ambia and Dr. Elaine Duryea for their contribution to the advancement of rural health.
Several providers, patients, and patient family members have been educated on aspects of prenatal care, maternal health community outreach and initiatives, and the status of maternal health in Texas.
One provider remarked to me, "This is an excellent refresher!" In addition to providers, an administrator said that he is sharing this information with members of his household that are wary of the healthcare system.
What an awesome time to be in healthcare! I am beyond thankful to you for responding to my initial email to educate the rural community. The impact will be felt for years to come."

Faculty Recognized for Medical Student Interviews
Dr. Clarice Grimes
Professor
Dr. Patricia Santiago-Munoz
Professor
On behalf of the UT Southwestern Medical School Admissions team:
"I am writing to express our deepest gratitude to the faculty in your department for generously volunteering their time to interview prospective students during the recent application cycle.
Conducting interviews is a crucial part of our admissions process, as it allows us to evaluate candidates beyond just their applications and test scores. The insights provided by interviewers like Dr. Grimes, Dr. Santiago-Munoz, and Dr. Wells are invaluable in assessing an applicant's fit for our program and their potential to become outstanding physicians. Without faculty members willing to share their time and expertise, we could not adequately assess the holistic qualities we look for in future students.
Your department’s commitment to our interview process directly contributes to UT Southwestern's ability to recruit exceptional individuals into each new class. We are thankful for their service and the meaningful role they play in shaping the next generation of medical professionals."
