Join Missio Seminary in Celebrating 50 Years

A Note from President Frank James
|
|
Missio Seminary is instrumental in developing missional leaders and impacting ministries around the globe. Last month, we highlighted our International students and alums who are following Jesus all over the world. This month, I received a letter from Dr. Tae-Geun Song, the Senior Pastor of the Samil Church in Seoul, Korea where we teach our Missional Theology program. I'd like to share an excerpt with you:
"On the first Sunday after my return, I shared with the congregation my visit to Missio Seminary: how much I was moved, even shocked, to see you living out your vision of "Following Jesus into the World." Many were stunned by your commitment to God’s mission, demonstrated by moving the main campus into the city of Philadelphia. Since I introduced your passion that Sunday, several pastors here have been requoting “Following Jesus into the World" in their sermons. I keep hearing how your missional emphasis has touched the hearts of our congregation.
Inspired and challenged by your commitment, we are grateful to announce that Samil also is making the missional turn. As our first step towards it, we are in the process of launching an institute for missional theology next month. By engaging in research, conversation, and teaching its significance and implications specifically in the Korean context, we envision to encourage and support Korean pastors and missionaries to follow Jesus into the “messiness.” We look forward to our partnership also in this endeavor."
Dr. Song’s email is a reminder that amid all the challenges and divisions in our messy world, God is still at work.
Be encouraged and keep praying,
Frank A. James III, DPhil, PhD
President and Professor of Historical Theology

Missio's New Director of Strategic Relations
|
|
We’re excited to introduce Wendy Walters as our new director of strategic relations. She will lead our development team and focus on relationships with our giving partners. A current MDiv student on track to graduate in June, she has been serving on staff at Missio for 3 years, first as an assistant in the Alumni, Church, and Student Relations department and most recently as the director.
Here’s what Wendy had to say about stepping into this role and what working at Missio means to her: "I’m beyond thrilled to have an opportunity to serve the community I love. Having seen firsthand the love of Christ through the faculty, staff, and alumni, I am so thankful to be one of the missional leaders being equipped through our excellent programs. It's an exciting time at Missio as we celebrate 50 years of God’s faithfulness. It is both spiritually and personally gratifying to know that together we will raise up missional leaders who are following Jesus into the world and addressing complex challenges.”
“We are very happy to have Wendy on our team,” said Charles Blachford, executive vice president. “She has excelled in every position she has held at the seminary and we are excited to have her in this new role.”

The REALChange campaign is underway through June 2022. We have reached 79% of our goal of $5.8 million to invest in resources to equip men and women to be strong, effective missional leaders in their churches and communities. In the months to come you’ll be hearing more about this important campaign and how you can participate.
Find out more about the REALChange campaign and why Missio is important to Matt Millen, four time Super Bowl winner, whose wife Pat, son Matthew, and daughter Marianne are Missio graduates. In addition, Pat Millen also served as a board member at Missio.

Even before the tumult of 2020, our country was experiencing a bevy of change, division, and uncertainty, both inside and outside the Church. Here’s the good news: in the shadow of our collective woundedness, we have an opportunity to partner with God in the healing process.

Missio founding faculty member Dr. Robert C. Newman will be honored at an event on November 5-6, 2021, recognizing his work over the past fifty years as both a Christian scholar and an astrophysicist (PhD, Cornell University and author of Genesis One and the Origin of the Earth). Featured speakers include Dr. Michael Behe (professor at Lehigh University and author of Darwin’s Black Box), Dr. Perry Phillips (PhD, Cornell University, MDiv ’76 Missio Seminary), and, of course, Bob, who has the final lecture of the afternoon.
Congratulations, Dr. Newman. We’re proud of you and thankful for your lifetime of ministry!
