A Note from President Frank James
|
|
The last few months at Missio have been busy and, as I reflect, I can’t help but be encouraged by God’s confirmation for the Kingdom work we have been called to do. I am reminded of the U2 song titled: “When Love Comes to Town.” It is a song about the love of Jesus making a difference as Bono declares: “When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame.” MISSIO is working hard to “catch that flame (of Jesus’ love).”
A few weeks ago, we video-taped a conversation with the last three board chairs--Joe Longo, Karen Sawyer and Susan Post. It was a very good conversation that revealed the missional heart and soul of MISSIO. This video will be released early in 2022.
Earlier this month, Assistant Professor Dr. Clarence Wright held a special meeting of the Baptist Pastors and Ministers Conference in Philadelphia. The meeting was focused on raising funding for the Arthur White Scholarship and Dr. Wright, president-elect of this organization, was able to raise nearly $11,000.
In a very real sense, love did come to Philly on November 18th when we held our Courageous Conversations on Faith and the Justice System at Bible Way Baptist Church. Our three panelists, the former mayor of Camden, the honorable Dana Redd; Dr. Damone Jones, who has spent 3 decades working with young men in the prison system; and Rev Carl Day, whose life story took him from prison to the pulpit. Each shared their stories of God’s grace and mercy and their vision for a different future. This was an extraordinary time and the video is available below.
I am deeply thankful for a seminary that seeks to genuinely “engage culture” as we say in our convictions statement. Be encouraged that MISSIO is following Jesus into the world--and catch that flame.
May God bless you and your faithfulness,
Frank A. James III, DPhil, PhD
President and Professor of Historical Theology

In Memory of our Friend, Dr. James Greely
Board of Trustees (1984-1995)
|
|
Dr. James H. Greeley, a former member of the Missio Board of Trustees (1984-1995), passed into glory on October 15 at the age of 96. He was a resident at the Charlestown retirement community near Baltimore, Md.
Jim was an inspiration to many for his commitment to serving God’s Kingdom, which included more than two dozen foreign mission trips and volunteering his dental skills to inmates of several prisons in the Baltimore area. He established a medical clinic for the homeless in Baltimore and volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
Dr. Greeley was a Navy pilot until leaving active duty to attend Penn State University and later graduating from the University of Penn Dental School. He became a professor of dentistry at Temple University and after several years Jim became a professor at the University of Maryland, from which he retired in 1990.
At the Charlestown retirement community, Jim served as a member of the church vestry and taught a Bible study for 19 years.
Dr. Greeley was a devoted friend of Missio for over 37 years. He followed closely the life of Missio from Hatfield to Philadelphia. He supported the seminary’s move to the city and saw it as a great opportunity to serve the needs of Christians in a greater way. His prayers and financial support of Missio were a great testimony of his faithfulness to an organization that he believed made a difference in the present and future of the church.

We are excited to share that Dr. Clarence E. Wright, president elect of the Baptist Pastors and Ministers Conference of Philadelphia and Vicinity, hosted the first Arthur White Scholarship day and raised close to $11,000. There were nearly 100 pastors and ministers in attendance including some prominent figures such as Dr. J. Wendell Mapson (Monumental Baptist Church), Dr. James Hall (Triumph Baptist Church) and Dr. William Shaw (White Rock Baptist Church and former president of the National Baptist Convention). Sis. Thelma White, widow of Dr. Arthur White was in attendance and gave remarks as was April Washington one of the first recipients of the scholarship. Missio board member Dr. Damone Jones delivered a powerful sermon and heartfelt introduction on behalf of the school.
