A Note from President Frank James
These are divisive times. Acrimony and accusations abound--sometimes even among those who love the same Christ.
The Apostle Paul tells us in Philippians 2: 1-4: “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love… , then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind … in humility value others above yourselves…”
This is a tall order in the midst of a very divided and violent world--especially for first-century followers of Jesus. It was a call to unity in a Greco-Roman world of disunity. It was a call to redemption in a world of injustice. It is a call to righteousness in a world of evil. It is a call to grace in a world of division.
Violence, injustice and division are not the way of Christ. And what are Jesus followers to do in such a “warped and crooked generation” (v. 15)? Paul says: “work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and act in order to fulfill his good purposes” (vs. 12-13).
Paul knows this world is not the way it is supposed to be, even among those who love Jesus. However, we are not to retreat, but engage, or as Paul says, we are to “work out our salvation” even if we are afraid. We are to “work” knowing that God is working his “good purposes” through us.
Can I get an AMEN?

Dr. David Lamb Presents at InterVarsity
Earlier this month, Professor Lamb taught Nehemiah for approximately 50 InterVarsity staff at the Mid-Atlantic Region’s August staff conference.
Key themes were discussed and contemplated as the group studied the life and ministry of Nehemiah, including: Organization, Opposition, and Oppression. But the main theme that was largely discussed was prayer because, as Dr. Lamb affirms, "Nehemiah prayed a lot and God's hand was upon him in many ways."
The participants enjoyed making a small Jenga-block model of the “Jerusalem wall” as they studied Nehemiah.
