Greetings Sherry,

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans' Unity Press Conference to support three African American Candidates running for federal office: Hill Harper for U.S. Senate, Mary Waters for Congress, and Dr. Pamela Pugh for Congress.

Executive Evans was kind in his remarks regarding how the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) continues to leave African American candidates out of the equation when deciding who they will thrust their support behind. He stated he believed there has been a systemic lessening of support for African American candidates. Election data has proven this!

As the most loyal demographic of the MDP, African Americans deserve greater respect from the party that will need our support after the Tuesday, August 6th, Primary Election, which is the most critical election for African Americans. The Tuesday, August 6th Primary Election will decide who our State Legislators, Members of Congress, and Senator will be. However, to date there has been no help in sight from the Michigan Democratic Party; in fact, the MDP is taking the African American vote for granted!

More than 13 Mayors from the Black Mayors of Michigan, President Mayor Marcus Muhammad, Benton Harbor, Vice President Mayor Kelly Garrett, Lathrup Village, representing urban communities pledged their support to the Unity Candidates: Hill Harper for Senate, Mary Waters for Congress, and Pamela Pugh for Congress, Sunday, June 28th, in the heart of Detroit, yet the party has doubled down on establishment representation, most of which who don't represent our interest! However, the party's actions today, could ultimately cost them tomorrow!

African Americans deserve greater respect and resources to run Get Out the Vote efforts NOW! We're counting on you to think critically, get involved, and join efforts to elect leadership which reflects our community!

School board member Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, a former district teacher, said she was happy for her “fellow DFT allies.” She sees the agreement as a win not only for teachers, but also the district more broadly, especially when it comes to teacher retention.

Higher teacher pay, she said, will make the district “competitive with contiguous districts seeking to poach our staff.” (Chalkbeat Detroit (Read Here)
