DAZED & CONFUSED

We are gathering this weekend on Sunday, May 19 at 10:00 AM to celebrate Pentecost Sunday. WE ASK THAT EVERYONE WEAR RED.
Rev. Scott Andrews will be preaching this weekend. His sermon title is "Dazed & Confused" from Acts 2:1-13.
We will celebrate Music Ministry Appreciation Sunday with a variety of selections from the various musical groups in the church.
The Anthem for the morning will be "Glory and Honor to You" shared with us by Fire Within Us. Special music will be "Come to the Music" shared with us by the Chancel Choir with Renee Bhatia on Flute. The prelude will be "He’s got the Whole World in His Hands" shared with us by the Carillon Handbells.

MUSIC MINISTRY
APRRECIATION SUNDAY
On Sunday, May 19, Cal Heights will celebration "Music Ministry Appreciation Sunday" during worship.
We will hear selections shared with the congregation from the Chancel Choir, Fire Within Us, and the Carillon Handbells.
We will also celebrate Dr. Anna DeMichele's 20th anniversary with Cal Heights UMC with a reception and short program in Hughes Hall.

CAL HEIGHTS UMC SCHOLARSHIPS
The Cal Heights UMC Scholarship committee is pleased to announce that we will once again offer scholarships for eligible candidates. Scholarships are available to any California Heights UMC member or constituent to use for tuition and/or expenses of books and supplies for education or training at a post-secondary level.
Scholarship packets with applications and recommendation forms are available on Monday, May 13, 2024. There are multiple ways to request the packets:
Stop by and pick them up in the church office (3759 Orange Ave.) between 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM Monday through Thursday.
Download from the church website (www.calheightsumc.org).
Requestion them by email (office@calheightsumc.org).
All materials need to be turned into the church office on or before Thursday, June 13, 2024.

KNITTER’S GROUP
Our knitter's group has returned! They gather from 6:30 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday evenings in the Bride's Room. All skill levels and all questions are welcome.

Mark your calendars for Groundlings Summer Camp. Youth and children (K-8th) will enjoy Bible stories, crafts, service opportunities and friends - long time and new - lots and lots of recreation. Registration will open in mid-March and all four weeks are sure to fill up fast! Each week, Groundlings Camp welcomes 30-50 children plus youth and adult volunteers. We are in need of campership support for a few campers this summer ($215 per week of camp - one full day includes includes Bible lesson, recreation, music, crafts and friendship plus a service project) as well as some supplies. Or perhaps, you would like to volunteer at camp - leading a song, craft or Bible lesson.

YOUNG ADULT GROUP
All young adults (ages 18-25) are invited to join in the community, fun and fellowship of the Young Adult Group. We meet up for meaningful dialogue, group outings, and community service.

LGBTQ+ Older Adults Forum

Did you know that May is Pride Month AND Older Adults Month? Being the Church, Long Beach will be celebrating both by hosting an important workshop on May 16 at Grace UMC. All are invited to attend. Hosted by the CSULB Gerontology Program, the workshop takes data on LGBTQ+ older adults and brings it forward as a way of understanding historical barriers and disparate treatment of this community. Areas included in the workshop: Trauma, Caregiving, Networks, Education and Next Steps. We hope that this event on LGBTQ+ Elders Day will proffer important conversation and awareness around the specific issues that challenge LGBTQ+ older adults as well as provide support and resources for the community.

Mobile Houseless Ministry News
Next volunteer date: Saturday, May 25
In-person volunteers and donations are needed. Specifically, donations of men’s and women’s jeans and shorts are needed. Please bring items to local church offices for distribution.
Church volunteers staff the donations table where clothes, shoes, socks, hygiene kits, flashlights, blankets, toilet paper and paper towels, dog food and snacks are all distributed. Jamie Armstead with Jumpstart Industries operates the food truck. Clergy serve communion and offer prayer. All of our churches contribute to this ministry where we serve about 50 to 60 people each month. Most are encamped within one mile of our mobile site. We see familiar faces and new faces.
Many are awaiting a housing voucher from the City of LB Health Department multiservice center, and will eventually move to an apartment at a converted motel. You are welcome to give us a hand sometime sorting clothes, or at the site.
