Word From the Pastor
“I invite you, in the name of Christ, to observe a holy Lent, by self-examination and penitence, by prayer and fasting, by works of love, and by reading and meditating on the Word of God.”

These traditional words, taken from the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship , are part of the liturgy we used at our Ash Wednesday Service of the Imposition of Ashes last week.

Yes, we have entered into the  Season of Lent . The word “lent” means “springtime”, from an older word meaning “lengthen” – as in longer daylight hours. This is indeed the time of year when we notice new birth and new growth. This metaphor is meant to encourage and lead us into  a   time of transformation – of spiritual growth, renewal, and rebirth

During this 40-day season, it is my hope is that each of us, individually and together as a community of faith, will take an honest, in-depth look at our personal and congregational journey of faith.

Lent, however, isn’t just a time of self-denial (the emphasis with which many of us grew up), but rather  a time to do whatever works best  for you  in order to return to the ways of God, and a recognition of God’s Presence in your life . It is my prayer that you will experience more fully God’s love, grace, and acceptance.

This particular year, during worship, we will include a Lenten Candle Liturgy. There will be a candle representing each week in Lent, with one additional candle extinguished each Sunday.

So, let us focus on a healthy and meaningful spiritual life, a life that experiences a connection with the Sacred/Divine in our midst and within ourselves.

Church Safety

We are actively addressing some safety issues with our building and our congregation. Concerns include fire safety, extreme weather safety, health emergencies, and personal safety. These topics are being considered from the standpoint of how we respond as a congregation, how the Safety Committee responds, and how we respond as individuals.

We recently had training on individual responses to a dangerous intruder. Tim O’Keefe (retired from the Tulsa Police Department) shared with us TPD's recommendations for protecting ourselves.

Flee – get away as fast as you can
Hide
Fight – anything can be used as a weapon.

We are currently organizing a committee to take a closer look at these issues and create a safety policy.

Please (click name to) contact our Christian Education Ministry Team Moderator, Susan West , if you would like to be involved with this effort.
The 2020 College Hill Personnel Ministry Team consists of Jim Brady, Charlotte Burton, Kathy Evanson, Marilyn Hill, Fred Schone (Moderator), and Rev. Todd Freeman (ex officio)
