On Saturday, January 12, our Ruling Elders currently on the Session, along with the outgoing elders, and Jennifer Campbell (our Clerk of Session) and myself, gathered for our annual
Session Retreat
at Camp Loughridge (see pictures in this newsletter).
This year, with a common interest in
leadership development
, we combined forces with the Council of
Fellowship Congregation Church
(UCC).
Our own
Glen Olson
and
P.J. Brobston
, who do this work together professionally, led us in several exercises and discussions on how we can better focus on, and grow in leadership development.
I am so pleased we are continuing to find meaningful ways to partner with Fellowship Congregational (you will remember that we held a combined worship service together at Phillips Seminary last fall, and also held a joint Confirmation Class) and other progressive congregations.
We closed the retreat in our separate church groups to do some necessary business. Please see the list of ministry assignments, and team moderators, in this newsletter.
I also want to mention the meaningful time we all had at our
Annual Congregational Meeting & Potluck
on January 27. If you weren’t able to make it, please pick up a copy of the
2018 Annual Report
. It’s filled with wonderful information concerning what we and our ministry teams accomplished last year.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: a historical, foundational principle of our denomination is that God equips the church for its mission. That means we
already
have the resources we need to fulfill God’s vision for us. Yet, that also means
the church needs whatever you are joyfully willing to contribute in order to be and become all we can be as a community of faith
.
I continue to encourage you, therefore, to think about the things that you are most passionate about – the things that bring deep meaning to your life. Then,
find a ministry team opportunity here at College Hill where you can volunteer and share your passion, energy, gifts and talents.
We have indeed been richly blessed as a loving, caring, and compassionate congregation.
Blessings,
Rev. Todd

Annual Session Retreat
Returning to Camp Loughridge again this year, our Session combined forces with the Council of Fellowship Congregational Church (UCC). We had a common interest in learning more about
Leadership Development. We were led by our own
Glen Olson and
P.J. Brobston - who do this work professionally! It was a meaningful experience, and one we will be processing throughout the year.

Equal Exchange
Coordinator Needed
Most commercial cocoa, coffee, and tea farmers have very little control over the growing market and price of their products. However,
Equal Exchange encourages co-operatives, environmentally sustainable growing practices, employs fewer middlemen, and provides better prices for growers.
For several years, College Hill has sold Equal Exchange products, with the small profit margin dedicated to Just Hope projects, such as micro-banks, clinic, and model farm. A very special thank you to Gay & Mark Miller and Martha Brown for their faithful dedication to our “store.”
Having ironed out all the wrinkles of ordering and keeping the “store” open and stocked, Terry Baxter, moderator of the Outreach & Mission ministry team, would like to offer the opportunity of this relatively simple but satisfying (& delicious) work to other volunteers(s).If the line of eager applicants ins long – take a number, and the winner will be announced by the ministry team in January. Any questions, call Martha Brown, 918-583-3652.

The Evolution of God
by Robert Wright
"Through the prisms of archaeology, theology, and evolutionary psychology, Wright's findings overturn basic assumptions about Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and are sure to cause controversy. He explains why spirituality has a role today, and why science, contrary to conventional wisdom, affirms the validity of the religious quest."
We select one or two books a year to read and discuss in depth over several monthly Tuesday evening sessions (typically on the fourth Tuesday)

Something for the Spirit
- by Steve Garnaas-Holmes
The Spirit of God is upon me,
because God has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
God has sent me to proclaim release to the
captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of God’s favor.
—Luke 4.18-19
Fill me, Spirit.
Fill me with the grace that is good news
for all who are poor.
Fill me with compassion for those who are captive
in body or in soul.
Grant me eyes of love,
with which to open eyes that are blind.
Set me free with freedom that will set others free.
Give me courage to to pray, to bear witness,
to speak, to act for justice.
Holy Spirit, let my life in every moment
proclaim your grace.
Amen.

Dr. Duane Bidwell
A longtime friend of College Hill (Duane and his family attended worship here regularly when he was a professor at Phillips Theological Seminary a decade ago) came back to Tulsa for a series of gatherings promoting his recent book,
When One Religion Isn't Enough: The Lives of Spiritually Fluid People. He shared his research and led a meaningful discussion here at College Hill on January 14.
Duane is the Professor of Practical Theology, Spiritual Care, and Counseling at Claremont School of Theology in California.
Rev. Freeman has known Duane since he served on the Board of Directors of the Tarrant Country AIDS Interfaith Network in Fort Worth in the mid 1990s, where Duane served as its Executive Director.
