"Since our last chat..."
"Since our last chat..." is a periodic column in The Causeway by Bar member Barb Townsend.
I confess to having taken a short leave of [ab]sense and agreed with my working children to be a substitute nanny for the Grands. First in March, I was stationed in Palm Beach County, Florida with three children, three dogs and a pool. Then, at the beginning of April, I traveled to Santa Cruz County, California to watch three growing girls and the attendant drama. Of course, I also intercepted some new bugs at both places, but I am truly amazed at how quiet and calm Pennsylvania is.
Back at the desk and swamped, I called Marty, a/k/a Martha Baum Walker, Esq., for a chat. Marty has joined the ranks of grandparents in the past year, so I was sure that she'd have something to share. She immediately spoke about her week as substitute nanny for her daughter Andrea. Marty admitted that, after a week of caring for Tillie Walker Lewis in Connecticut, she returned to Chambersburg exhausted. Marty also is step grandmother to Alice Mae Spang, daughter of Nathaniel 'Nate' Spang, Esq., and Maureen Flannery Spang, Esq.
Marty grew up in Bucks County, attending Pennridge High in Perkasie. She then attended Wilson, securing a bachelor's degree in History in 1969. During college she had time for field hockey, basketball and lacrosse. After graduation, she became a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association referee in these sports. After college, she entered Dickinson School of Law, earning an award of a juris doctorate in the spring of 1972. After the summer of the bar exam, Marty began working at Barley Snyder in Lancaster. In 1973, she married John R. Walker, Esq., (now one of our senior judges) and opened the practice of law in Chambersburg at the beginning of 1974. [John was a part time employee at the District Attorney's office at the time, so participated in the private practice]. Marty is the first women to practice law in Franklin County.
Marty rapidly decided to concentrate in family law. However, she was also the solicitor for Farmers and Merchants Trust Company for years and has been a director of the bank since 1979. In the late 1980s, Marty added President Judge Carol L. Van Horn as a partner. Later, Lynn McBride, Esq., Tom Trgovac, Esq., M. Teri Hall Stiltner, Esq., Michael J. Connor, Esq. and Suzanne Miller Trinh, Esq., among others, also worked or work with Marty. Marty has also enjoyed many years as a director for Menno Haven.
Marty loves gardening. The empty security barrels in front of the courthouse became a challenge so she initiated the seasonal decorating and planting. Recently, with the aid of Annie R. Gomez, Esq., and Kristen B. Hamilton, Esq., joined by our Executive Director and children, the winter blues were replaced with lively pansies.
Marty married David F. Spang, Esq., in 2003. She and David love to travel, so it doesn't hurt that her son Gregory Walker, Esq., is an attorney for Latham Watkins stationed in Frankfort, Germany. Andrea, mother of little Tillie, is senior fiction editor for Penguin Random House in New York.
I had to call Ed Wine about a contract so we ended talking about other things once the business part of the call ended. J. Edgar Wine, Esq., entered the bar at about the same time as I did. What I didn't know was that Ed is originally from Greencastle, although he completed high school as a student at Mercersburg Academy. Ed secured a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Virginia in 1974. From there, he entered William and Mary School of Law and was awarded his juris doctorate in 1977.
After graduation, Ed took off a year, but began working at Maxwell, Maxwell and Dick. In 1982, Ed was hired by Kidde Credit, then a subsidiary of Grove, involved in the financing of the purchase of heavy equipment. In 1989, he took a position at Letterkenny Army Depot, but was returned to the Grove Manufacturing Company family in 1992. He left Grove in 2002, to rejoin William S. Dick, Esq., in the Waynesboro offices of the firm, now known as Dick, Stein, Schemel, Wine & Frey, LLP.
Ed married his wife Deborah in 1980. The couple have two daughters, Kate, an elementary school counselor in the Waynesboro School District, and Elizabeth, about to be awarded her doctorate in clinical psychology.
Ed is concentrating in Estate Planning and Business. He's one of five adjunct lecturers at Shippensburg University in the Grove Business school in business law. He mentioned Elliott Sulcove, Esq., is another of the lecturers. Ed relaxes by hiking, especially in Fulton County and reading.
I caught Lam D. Truong, Esq., attorney at Franklin County Legal Services, between clients. Although ethnically of Vietnamese origin, Lam is a South Central Pennsylvanian. Lam graduated from Cedar Cliff High School in Camp Hill in 2003. He then pursued a degree in psychology at Shippensburg University, graduating in 2007. He was awarded a J.D., by Dickinson School of Law in 2010.
Right after graduation, Lam began a private practice in Dillsburg and worked for a nonprofit. In July, 2014, he accepted full time employment at Franklin County Legal Services. In discussing the change, Lam noted that he really enjoys just being able to help people without the necessity of marketing himself that private practice requires. He is doing just about everything, but especially likes working with immigration law.
Both Lam and Krystal J. MacIntyre, Esq., live in Carlisle. Lam is an avid golfer, and enjoyed a hobby level of soccer and tennis while in school. He loves to read. I tried for an exclusive...
So I called Krystal. She is concentrating in workman's compensation and social security disability at DiLoreto, Cosentino & Bollinger, P.C., where she began working in January, 2014.
Krystal is from Bedford County, graduating from Chestnut Ridge High School in 2002. She headed to the University of Pittsburgh, [which may have had an impact on Dennis DiLoreto], where she concentrated on political science. After her degree in 2006, she took off a year and worked as a lifeguard at the Marriott Hotel chain. This gave her the credits to visit Aruba. Finally she headed to Dickinson School of Law, receiving her J.D. in 2010.
Although Lam and Krystal were classmates, Lam stated that they were just friends during law school. Allegedly, they did not begin to date until 2012. Krystal assured me that she is not stalking Lam.
Krystal loves travel and being outdoors. Since she has four siblings (her position is four in the family of five children), she must enjoy the quiet of the outdoors. Her family mainly remains in the Bedford area.
Krystal shared an amusing episode: the best dressed client at a hearing was wearing a tuxedo. Fortunately, it was a workman's compensation settlement hearing as the client was in a wedding shortly after the scheduled hearing time. I wondered if it was the right garb for someone claiming Social Security Disability.
