Letter from the Executive Director

We at GCLA commemorate Women’s History Month by advocating for raising the conditions, pay, and standards under which women (and men) in early education work. According to the Center for American Progress, 97% of early childhood educators are women, and 38% are women of color. Advancing the cause of women isn’t a once-a-year event. At GCLA, we see it as our duty to uplift women, men, and families through everyday action.

Our early education center creates jobs for teachers by providing early childhood education for children and families in South Los Angeles. Our Early Learning Expansion Network helps families and center-based educators increase incomes, upgrade facilities, and standardize education practices. The Early Learning Alliance allows early educators to share best practices across facilities and build relationships with legislators and decision-makers at all levels of government. Though our programs are gender-neutral in their missions, their composition is overwhelmingly women.

Early educators are the architects of our society's future. They are the ones who mold our next generation into the innovative artists, computer scientists, and construction workers our society needs to thrive. Beyond the fundamental skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, early educators teach children to value others, fostering a growth mindset and lifelong abilities from a young age. These social and emotional skills are the bedrock of a prosperous society, and it's our duty to ensure that these educators are respected and supported.

It's a harsh reality that the foundation of our society's social and emotional well-being is built by women who often earn inadequate salaries. This is not just a matter of equity but of our society's survival. What message are we sending to the next generation of potential educators when they witness their teachers struggling to make ends meet? How can we claim that “Our children are our most valuable asset” when those we entrust to care for and educate them are undervalued? We must take immediate action to reverse this trend if we are to enhance our society's freedom, safety, and security.

The Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA) asks you to please vote for our proposal, "Health and Wellness in South Los Angeles,” which is option ‘B’ on the ballot. Our proposal will create a wellness collaborative space to enhance the health and well-being of residents in South Los Angeles. Community members will be able to receive health assessments, wellness referrals, and case management assistance in a trauma-informed, supportive environment. The proposal also offers yoga, meditation, nutrition, and physical fitness classes to reduce stress and anxiety while uplifting physical health and mental well-being.

GCLA Leadership Tours Special Needs Network’s Center for Autism + Developmental Disabilities

On February 21, 2024, Gloria Davis, Executive Director of Girls Club of Los Angeles, Marvin Espinoza, Chief Operating Officer, and Britney Gray, Executive Assistant, visited the Special Needs Network's (SNN) Center for Autism + Development Disability (CADD) (https://snnla.org). The organization’s new office is on the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital campus.

CADD is a full-service autism health and community center in the historic Watts/Willowbrook/Compton neighborhood. It delivers comprehensive medical and developmental services.

“Families are challenged to find resources for their children and often have to travel to different places; The Special Needs Network’s CADD is responding to the crisis of autism and other developmental disabilities in South LA,” said Ms. Gloria J. Davis, Executive Director of Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA). GCLA provides early care and education services at their Century Boulevard location (www.girlsclubla.org), where several children are referred to receive special needs services.

The facility's staff, Krystal Williams and Xavier Stiles, graciously provided a tour and an online presentation that helped the team understand the depth and breadth of services. The facility also has a space for families to play and learn with their children while waiting for case management.

The new facility allowed GCLA leadership to learn of the many resources available to South LA Families, such as behavior therapy, to reinforce new skills and positive behaviors. It also helps families thrive by providing support and interventions families can use at home to strengthen the therapies children receive. Indeed, SNN CDD teaches parents and caregivers the skills they need to advocate for children in educational, therapeutic, and social settings. Kudos to Special Needs Network, Founder and CEO Areva Martin, a multi-award-winning Civil Rights Attorney, for many other accomplishments.

Youth Development: Project LEAYD at Teach Tech Middle School

During February, the Girls Club of Los Angeles’ (GCLA) Youth Development Program, Project LEAYD, conducted workshops with Teach Tech Middle School’s 7th Grade Success Academy Cohort. Twenty-seven students participated in the weekly seminars delivered to eager students every week. Rudy Richardson, GCLA’s Director of Programs, and Kimberly Williams, GCLA’s Director of Early Learning Programs, facilitated the workshops.

The workshop's subject matter was developed with Teach Tech Middle School and GCLA. Rachel Nunley, the school’s administrator, and Marvin Espinoza, the COO of Girls Club of Los Angeles, agreed that the workshops would focus on the character development pillars foundational to Teach Tech’s educational philosophy.

February’s Character Pillar was “Kindness.” Kindness is defined as being friendly, generous, and considerate. After defining kindness, the workshops focused on:

Fostering random acts of kindness
Kind vs. unkind behaviors
Traits of kindness are:
Gentleness
Compassion
Forgiveness
Appreciativeness

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to teach the leaders of tomorrow the qualities that we’d love for them to exhibit every day. All month, students were challenged to emulate Booker T. Washington's quote: “If you want to lift yourself, lift someone else.” The Project LEAYD workshops in March will focus on the Character Pillar of fairness.

Desarrollo juvenil: Proyecto LEAYD en la escuela secundaria Teach Tech

Durante febrero, el Programa de Desarrollo Juvenil del Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA), Proyecto LEAYD, llevó a cabo talleres con el grupo de la Academia de Éxito de séptimo grado de Teach Tech Middle School. Veintisiete estudiantes participaron en los seminarios semanales impartidos a estudiantes entusiastas cada semana. Project LEAYD at Teach Tech High School (Financial Literacy Series)

GCLA’s flagship Youth Development Program, Project LEAYD, continues its partnership with Chase Bank. Chase is again presenting its three-part workshop series on Financial Literacy to high school students. Financial Health Expert Christopher Beene, Vice President and Community Manager for Chase Bank of Inglewood, facilitates the workshop.

Mr. Beene opened the workshop by sharing his own story on money. The students were attentive as he shared his journey, establishing his excellent credit standing. He has taught the youth about Financial Literacy and given them actionable advice on how to make smart financial decisions regarding credit, debt, spending, and saving.

He provided them with the knowledge they would take throughout their lives. Mr. Beene’s relatable story opened an energizing dialogue about current and future financial planning. This workshop series was timely and helpful for the seniors in Project LEAYD who are leaving to attend college in the Fall. The youth were engaged and walked away with information that would carry them into adulthood.

Proyecto LEAYD en Teach Tech High School (Serie de alfabetización financiera)

Estamos emocionados de destacar a nuestro nuevo miembro del equipo, Karol Pastrana-Cano. Karol inició su relación con The Girls Club of Los Angeles a través de nuestro programa juvenil, Proyecto LEAYD. Karol es parte de la cohorte convocada en Teach TECH High School. Karol forjó una excelente relación con el equipo del Proyecto LEAYD y se mantuvo conectado. El verano pasado, Karol fue contratado como trabajador juvenil. Lo colocaron en Faith Children's Center, donde floreció y comenzó a considerar cambiar su especialización universitaria a educación.

Una vez que Karol completó las horas asignadas a través del programa de trabajadores juveniles, continuó trabajando para GCLA como voluntario. Se ha convertido en un miembro vital del equipo y los profesores dependen de él. Su coherencia y compromiso se han demostrado en su ética de trabajo y, debido a esto, Karol fue contratado oficialmente como empleada a tiempo parcial de GCLA. March Food Share Highlights

The Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA) is proud of the service the Food Share Program provides the community. Every Wednesday, The Food Share Program coordinates a team of volunteers and staff to provide food, PPE, and other life-preserving items for individuals and families in need.

Working closely with their partners, Food Forward, Greater New Bethel Church, and The Peoples Project powered by LA Fed, GCLA can provide a balanced diet for those in need. A typical bag of groceries includes meat, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and shelf staples.

The Food Share program happens every Wednesday at the GCLA Headquarters at 2057 W. Century Boulevard in Los Angeles. If you would like to volunteer or you would like to RSVP to reserve groceries, please get in touch with GCLA’s Community Outreach and Referral Specialist, Michelle Vasquez, by emailing mvasquez@girlsclubla.org

GCLA is always in need of volunteers for the Food Share program. Volunteers are essential for GCLA to fulfill our mission of building communities and contributing to society.

Teen Mental Health Summit

On Saturday, April 13th, the Los Angeles County Office of Violence Prevention is hosting a Teen Mental Health Summit in South LA. The event is being held at Jesse Owens Park (9651 S Western Ave, LA. Through engaging workshops and interactive activities, teens will be equipped with the tools to navigate mental well-being.

Together, we will explore strategies for self-care, coping mechanisms, and resilience. Breakfast and Lunch will be served. Participants will receive free giveaways.

GCLA is asking for volunteers to help us Wednesday mornings with our community food distribution program. Volunteers will sort, pack, and distribute food for members of the surrounding community. Our team of staff and volunteers maintain a warm, welcoming environment to help provide a caring safety net for those who need it most.

The schedule is Wednesday Mornings from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. All volunteers will receive free masks, gloves, and COVID tests. The requirements are Proof of Covid-19 vaccination, the ability to work with a team, and taking a COVID-19 rapid test onsite. El horario es los miércoles por la mañana de 8:30 am a 10:00 am. Todos los voluntarios recibirán máscaras, guantes y pruebas de COVID gratis. Los requisitos son Prueba de vacunación contra el Covid-19, capacidad para trabajar con un equipo y realizar una prueba rápida de COVID-19 en el lugar.
