Law Day Mock Trial

The FCBA YLD will be hosting Law Day on Friday, May 6th in Courtroom 1 at the Franklin County Courthouse. Eighth graders will be able to attend and participate in a Mock Trial.

This year's theme is "Miranda - more than words". Students are invited to submit a poster with this year's theme and win a gift certificate. Winning posters will be displayed during Juror Appreciation Day.

Friends of Legal Services Book Sale

The Franklin County Friends of Legal Services group has kicked off their annual book drive which will be its 32nd Annual Book Sale. The book drive will run through Monday, April 4. Look for book donation boxes in stores, banks, and offices throughout the area. The  locations are listed on www.fcls.net.

Anyone with a large quantity of books to donate can make special arrangements by calling Franklin County Legal Services at (717) 262-2326 or by emailing gloria@fcls.net. The group solicits all types of books in good condition -- used and new, hardback and paperback -- and also artwork, CDs, DVDs, maps, sheet music, and books on tape.

Book Sale Information
When: Mother's Day weekend, May 6-8
Where: Laird Hall on the Wilson College campus in Chambersburg
Hours: 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Friday, May 6
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 7
noon to 4:00 PM on Sunday, May 8

The group expects to offer over 60,000 books of all types at bargain prices, with a silent auction for artwork and rare books. Proceeds support the provision of civil legal services for low-income individuals in the community.

The organization is also seeking volunteers to help transport, sort, price, and box books, to help set up the sale and clean up afterwards, and to staff the sale. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Gloria Keener at (717) 262-2326.

Gloria identified a specific volunteer need:  We really need someone with a strong back who would be interested in working about once a week with one of our regular volunteers in the evening to stack boxes of books at our book warehouse.

Pro Bono

A big thank you is extended to all of the Franklin County Bar Association Members who have signed up for pro bono involvement! 52 private attorneys have already signed up in 2016 and 21 matters have been accepted so far this year. If you would still like to sign up to be contacted by MidPenn Legal Services, Law Offices of WIN, and Franklin County Legal Services for your availability to handle civil cases on a pro bono basis, please contact Gloria Keener at gloria@fcls.net  or 717-262-2326. Your support is deeply appreciated and helps make equal access to justice possible in our community!

Newsletter items deadline

The deadline to submit items for The Causeway is the 20th of each month.

"Since our last chat..."
"Since our last chat..." is a periodic column in The Causeway by Bar member Barb Townsend.

February is an impossibly short month. Once again I had plans and am on the road. However, I didn't take the time, between being sure that my desk was clear and anticipating the backlog when I return, to assure that this column was complete. While thinking I may have to skip a month, Victoria Edwards, Esq., provided me with a fun story through a posting on Facebook. If you've read this already, apologies.

Victoria posted a picture of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy looking adorable and cuddly. The script was a lament. It seems that the purchaser bought the puppy as a surprise for her husband.

Unfortunately, the husband was, allegedly unknown to wife, allergic to the pup. Thus the plea: Please find a home for Alan. He's a talented vacation planner, do-it-yourselfer and driver.

I could not resist. I responded to the post. I'll provide temporary housing, I said, during the remodeling of my house, while the author looks for permanent housing for her displaced....

Before I headed out on this road trip, I saw Michael Toms, Esq., on the Third Floor of the Courthouse. Since I've been reading a series by Laura Perry, I thought I'd share my find with Mike. Ms. Perry is the author of a series of murder mysteries solved by a Chief Inspector for the Suriete of Quebec Province in Canada. I started by asking Mike if he read murder mysteries.

A conversation ensued. Since we tend to concentrate in different areas of the law, it proved worthy of comment. Mike acknowledge that he no longer watches television dramas that entail trial practice. He avoid any contact with police or crime shows or reading material. He is not interested in detective novels. I reflected and then admitted that if I see a domestic dispute developing or there's something about child custody, I immediately start looking for another program or book. I have an adverse reaction when social friends attempt to discuss support or the latest gossip about couples. We do get tired of the same situation repeating itself...
