Wills for Hereos

Wills for Heroes

The FCBA Young Lawyers Division's Wills for Heroes event took place on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the Waynesboro Hospital.  8 first responders (or spouses of first responders) took advantage of this service. The majority were from the Medic 1 Unit. Most of the the first responders/spouses availed themselves of all of the documents: Will, Financial POA and Living Will/Medical POA.

Many members volunteered their time to make this event a success!

Wills for Heroes programs provide essential legal documents free of charge to our local first responders. By helping first responders plan now, they ensure their family's legal affairs are in order before a tragedy hits.

As attorneys, we have a tendency to demonstrate obsessive compulsive traits. That's what helped us through the hours of reading in school. We utilize it when we reread contracts or check titles. The trait manifests itself when we work late for a stranger, instead of being home with family. I wondered if we were really different in our free time and here's some of what I found:

Michael J. Connor, Esq., began playing ice hockey when he was growing up in Hershey, PA. The league in which he was enrolled was similar to Little League or Peewee Football. Mike rarely had time for ice hockey after graduating from high school in 1984. He headed to Penn State where he received his degree in 1988.

After college, Mike enjoyed a summer in England working construction for his sister's father-in-law. Mike then returned to the states and got a job doing federal contracting and lived in Georgetown and then Arlington, Virginia. Mike finally headed to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where he earned his law degree in 1995.

For the past six years, Mike has played ice hockey as a member of an adult league in Hagerstown, MD. His team is sponsored by Holcim, a Swedish cement company. The team recently won the championship and was awarded the coveted "Keg Cup".

Mike's been married to Tina, a graduate of Glassboro State and Montclair State University in New Jersey, since 1999. Mike and Tina and family came to Franklin County in 2004. A former juvenile probation officer, Tina currently works as a substitute teacher in the Shippensburg School District. They are the busy parents of Josh, 13, Rachel, 11, and Anna, 6.

Mike has been employed as an adjunct professor at Shippensburg University, teaching Business Law. He's a generalist, including family law, at Walker, Connor and Spang.

Donald L. Kornfield, Esquire, is currently working primarily in transactional law. He started at Ulman and Painter and, through the 1980's and early 1990's, focused his practice on family law and collections. Don is planning to possibly semi retire, spending winter months in Florida and do more work via Internet and Skype.

Don has been involved in the Single Action Shooting Society as a hobby since 2001. The group uses weapons manufactured from the end of the Civil War until about 1900. Don enjoys the fellowship and sportsmanship of the group in which he participates. He tells me that the group sets up competitive meet matches of six stages, shooting at both some still and some moving targets on the clock. His nom de guerre during meets is Cowboy Curley.

Don attended Franklin and Marshall after graduating from high school in 1967 in Lancaster, PA. He received his degree in 1971 with a major in political science and a minor in philosophy. He then attended William and Mary, earning his J.D. in 1974. Don is a member of the group that meets annually for lunch to celebrate their admission to the bar.

Don and his wife of fifteen years, Brenda, are both grandparents and step grandparents. Don noted that life changes positively when you realize that it is not all about yourself.

I confess I've known about Ed Wenger's hobby for years. George E. Wenger, Jr. Esq., collects Studebakers, having bought his first, a 1963 Avanti, upon graduation from Lehigh in 1970. Ed confesses to having fifteen vehicles at present. Included is the 1943 Wheezle; a small personal carrier:

Can you believe this is a Studebaker?

Ed's a local, having graduated from Chambersburg Area Senior High School in 1966. He then started at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. After graduation as an electrical engineer, he entered basic training for the Pennsylvania National Guard. A year later he started at Dickinson School of Law and earned his J.D. in 1974. Ed was an attorney at Sharpe and Sharpe when I began working as an attorney. Now a partner at Hoskinson and Wenger, Ed has an eclectic collection of business clients and estates. Ed is also a skilled custody conciliation officer.

Ed married Wenda in 1976. They're the parents of two girls, Susan's an attorney, and grandparents of two boys. Wenda, a nurse, and family enjoy Ed's hobby. Ed notes that he owns two of the bullet nose Studebakers, the 1951 model, as well as a really classic model.
