A Piece of Our Past

In May of 1937, the LePage family started construction of a new theater partly on the site of the old Keith Theater. Frank LePage was owner and general manager. Ethel LePage was cashier. The gala opening of the Millinocket Theater took place on Sept. 9, 1938. It was located at 75 Penobscot Avenue and had 702 seats.

Public Works Department

The initial town wide street sweeping is complete. We will continue to sweep areas that need a second pass as well as washouts from rainstorms.

The crew has been working to install pickleball nets at the Town tennis courts. This is slow work to avoid unnecessary damage to the court surface. When completed the nets will be removable.

We have poured a concrete slab on Peddler’s Hill to accommodate a new ADA style porta potty.

The department has been steadily filling potholes. Please contact us regarding any that we have missed.

Tom Creehan, James Perry, Mike York, Jeremy Santerre and Bryan Duprey all attended the “Highway Congress” trade show sponsored by the Maine chapter of the American Public Works Association. This event gives the crew a chance to speak with the vendors of the products we use on a regular basis. There are short training sessions, equipment demonstrations and test drives of the latest Public Works equipment and tools.

The compost pile is open for residents to drop off brush and yard waste. Bagged leaves must be emptied, and the bags disposed of properly.

*The contractor that grinds the brush has requested that nothing longer than eight feet is left at the brush pile.

As always, we are accepting all the cardboard, plastic jugs, and tin cans that we can get for recycling. Help us keep as much waste as possible from ending up in the landfill.

The cemetery was fertilized and treated for grubs this spring. We will be reseeding the areas damaged by grubs last season.

Bryan Duprey, Director of Public Works

Wastewater Department

We would like to remind the residents of Millinocket to please NOT flush wipes, paper towels, grease, plastics, Q-tips or anything other than toilet paper into the sewer system. Even the "flushable" wipes will clog the sewer system. These items are causing extreme plugs to the sewer system and costly maintenance to our pumping stations. We would like to thank the residents for this consideration.

Wastewater Treatment Facility Superintendent

Millinocket School Department

The Summer Food Service program will operate from 6/17-8/23. Extending the SFSP drastically reduces the amount of days that the children of our communities will face food insecurity. Children 18yrs and under will be offered their meals at no cost. Meals can be purchased by adults if they wish to participate. We have also increased our meal offerings to include breakfast and afternoon snack in certain locations. We will sponsor 10 sites from Millinocket to Medway. Meal times and locations can be viewed by visiting www.hotlunchsummer.com once our application has been approved by the MDOE’s Child Nutrition Office.

The School Department took delivery of a second KIA Carnival 8 passenger van for student and staff transportation, purchased with  ESSER III grant funds. The new van was literally put in use the day after it arrived and both vans have been used for multiple student trips instead of bus transportation.

The last weeks of school are extremely busy for the custodial staff, including helping with the Jr/Sr Prom, spring concerts, Class Day, Scholarship Night, 2 dance recitals, Graduation, Town voting and the Granite St. Field Day. We are grateful for our custodial staff!

The Food Service Department received a Local Foods for Schools grant and have used those funds to purchase 450lbs of locally raised and processed beef and chicken from Maple Lane Farms in Charleston. It’s an exciting time to work in child nutrition and we cannot wait to incorporate these new products into our recipes in the fall.

The Bikes for Books assembly was on Friday, May 31 at Granite Street School. Students had the opportunity to put in tickets to win a bike based upon their reading efforts. A boy and a girl from each class were given a bike and a helmet from the local Mason Chapter. Mark Pelkey, Mike Murphy, and Scott Walsh joined us and took turns drawing names. The students were excellent listeners and cheered for the winners. (Pictured top right)

On Friday, May 24 all Granite students were invited to a puppet show at the auditorium at Stearns, sponsored by the Boreal Theater. The Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers from Bar Harbor gave a very entertaining performance. Our students were a wonderful, polite audience.

We would like to thank all of our dedicated subs in all areas (classroom, kitchen, custodial and office) - they rarely say no, always come through the doors with a smile and can step in and step up. They are appreciated!

Early in the winter we surveyed families, communicated with a program called Healthy Kids and have moved down the path a bit more. They have worked to get licensed in Maine and we will be the first partner with them to provide before and after school care. We are planning on this to begin in the fall. We know families in Millinocket need to work, care for family member, etc. and we hope this will be a service to support the family unit
