A Piece of Our Past

The Millinocket Memorial Library opened 11/11/1919 after the end of WWI when a group of dedicated mothers of servicemen and other townspeople got together and made it happen. Books were donated at first. This library was located on Central Street in the building known as the Decker Block, later Gonya’s Drug Store. The library remained at this location until the current library building opened in 1963.

Municipal Updates

Tax Collector

FY2024 Taxes were due on January 25, 2024. The time is approaching for me to prepare to send out 30-day notices in advance of a possible lien on your property. When the town sends a certified letter in anticipation of a lien, the additional cost is passed on to the property owner. I want to help you avoid that if possible. Please email taxcollector@millinocket.org

Sharon Cyr, Tax Collector

Department of Tax Assessment

Friendly reminder: The listers for the Town’s revaluation project will be returning to our town this week on Friday, May 3rd, 2024.

Their typical work schedule will be Friday and Saturday. They will have town identification badges and their vehicles will have the Town of Millinocket logo

Public Works Department

Street Sweeping is underway. We will focus on the downtown area and main thoroughfares first and then move into residential areas.

Any resident needing bagged leaves hauled to the compost pile can leave the bags next to the street and contact public works to arrange a pickup by calling 723-7030.

Sand piles can be left in front of residences, but we ask to leave the sand in small rows and not large piles. Our sweeper will pick them up more efficiently this way.

We have been working to repair damage caused by our snow removal efforts over the winter. Contact Public Works if you have an area damaged by us in need of repair.

The contractor that grinds the brush has requested that nothing longer than 8 feet be brought to our brush pile. Anything longer than that plugs the grinder.

The compost pile is open for residents to drop off brush and yard waste. Bagged leaves must be emptied, and the bags disposed of properly.

As always, we are accepting all the cardboard, plastic jugs and tin cans that we can get for recycling. Help us keep as much waste as possible from ending up in the landfill.

The Cemetery gate is now open. We will begin our regular season in May with the first week including cleaning up of any damaged and wind-blown decorations.

Bryan Duprey, Director of Public Works

Wastewater Department

We would like to remind the residents of Millinocket to please NOT flush wipes, paper towels, grease, plastics, Q-tips or anything other than toilet paper into the sewer system. Even the "flushable" wipes will clog the sewer system. These items are causing extreme plugs to the sewer system and costly maintenance to our pumping stations. We would like to thank the residents for this consideration.

Jason Ingalls,

Wastewater Treatment Facility Superintendent

East Millinocket Police Department

To date in 2024, we have responded to 3,618 calls for service with almost 2,100 of those calls being in the Town of Millinocket. We are continuing to see a high number of impaired drivers with officers encountering an increasing number of drivers being impaired by drugs.

We are excited to announce the recent promotion of Mallory Clayton to the position of Patrol Sergeant. Sgt. Clayton and K-9 Derby also recently left to finish K-9 Derby's certifications with his final certification being in narcotics detection. Once completed Sgt. Clayton and K-9 Derby will be certified in apprehension, article searches, tracking, building searches, area searches and narcotics detection.

Ofc Mike Stevens has recently completed his field training and will attend the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in the upcoming months. In other news, we have filled two of our open patrol vacancies with the return of Gary "Opie" Lakeman, who will be back with us in May. Ofc Lakeman is a veteran officer of the Katahdin Region, and we are excited to have him back. We have also hired Jordan Knappe, who is currently a corrections officer at the Penobscot County Jail. Ofc Knappe will also begin his field training in May.

After many months of planning, agency cooperation and coordination, we survived the Eclipse of 2024. Thankfully, it was a very safe event with our only major problem being very heavy traffic congestion. We want to thank all the area public safety agencies as well as community organizations that helped us make this a safe and successful event for thousands of people.

The Food Service Department Coordinator Mia Charette had a busy month meeting with different businesses to further implement the changes necessary to meet the HMI Grant goals. Pine Tree Equipment reps visited Granite Street to begin the process of replacing the double convection oven and steamer unit with a double combi-oven and tilt skillet. She also met with a rep from Heartland Solutions to plan the move to an updated nutrition software program. If all goes as planned, we will have these updates completed by the start of the new school year.

Reps from W.B Masons are assisting with a new cafeteria layout at Stearns. The new layout will consist of both new and old tables.

Our new Graduation has arrived and been installed by Louie DiFrederico and Ronnie McInnis. The sign is gorgeous, and it is a huge upgrade from the old one. It will feature all of our seniors; college bound, workforce, and military. It is right across from the main office. It was purchased through Bangor Neon Signs and designed by our own alum, Edward Tapley. He has done a great job.

Career Fair on 4/2/2024 was a tremendous success! We had 6 visiting schools. (Schenck, Katahdin, PVHS, MA, Lee and Region III.) A very sincere and special thank you needs to be said to Sue Buzzell, Kyle Leathers, Amanda Welch, and Katie DiFrederico, members of the MELMAC committee. They plan, organize and execute these events and purchases for students, as well as attend conferences that are a requirement for this grant. They put in countless hours of their time and have been amazing.

Our Virtual Snow day on March 21 was a success. We had 85% attendance at Stearns Junior Senior High School and We had 79% of our students at Granite Street School return completed packets for the virtual day on March 21, 2024. Granite Street School attendance for Parent Teacher Conferences was 87%.
