In the early days of Millinocket, baseball games were played at the local ballpark in the area extending from near Aroostook Avenue School (built 1915) all the way to Millinocket Stream. Water St. and the extension of State St. came later. The ballpark area had a large grandstand and a pavilion.

Millinocket Farmers' and Artisans' Market 2024
Age Friendly Millinocket is pleased to announce the continuation of the Millinocket Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market, to be held on Saturdays from 9-2 pm (set-up starts at 8 am) at the Veterans Memorial Park, 50 Penobscot Ave. The dates for 2024 are July 6- October 12 (except for Sept. 14, when Trails End Festival will be at that location). Applications and vending requirements are available in person at the Town Office at 197 Penobscot Ave, or can be downloaded here. This year it is NOT necessary to also have a Peddler’s permit for the Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market. The fee is only $40 for the season, or $10 for single Saturdays, depending on your scheduling needs. Vendors need their own canopies and tables. If you have questions, email or call market coordinator Barbara Riddle-Dvorak at 917.279.5890. Food trucks are welcome and must meet all state requirements.
Chiron Farms will be at the market on July 6, Aug. 10, Sept. 7, and October 7 to distribute produce to their Maine Senior FarmShare participants, as well as selling to the general public. To sign up with them beforehand, find them on Facebook, email or call 703-795-1898. You can also sign up on the spot at the market.
The market is actively seeking farmers and vendors of items such as locally produced candles, honey, jams, jellies and pickles as well as farm-raised meat, eggs and butter. Food trucks are welcome as well! We anticipate a wide array of unique handcrafted delights such as jewelry, quilted bags and kitchen items, hooked decorative pillows, and crocheted toys and clothing. Displays of Original artwork and books by local creatives are encouraged! Last year we had visitors from all around the States, as well as Europe, looking for something Maine-made to take home or cook that night.
Come on out and support your town and meet your neighbors!

Public Works Department
Bryan Duprey and Jeremy Santerre Attended a “Work Zone Traffic Control” Safety class sponsored by Maine DOT. All PW Employees have now taken this course. Steve Perreault, Tom Creehan, and Mike York attended the “Roadway Fundamentals” class also sponsored by the Maine DOT.
Public Works Garage and Transfer Station facility was visited by the Maine Municipal Association Risk Assessment/Loss Control for an inspection of both facilities. I was informed of a few updates needed to make our facilities safer for employees and the visiting public. Overall, we are in good standing with this inspection.
Street Sweeping is underway. We have had multiple breakdowns with sweeper this spring causing delays in getting to all parts of town.
Sand piles can be left in front of residences, but we ask to leave the sand in small rows and not large piles. Our sweeper will pick them up more efficiently this way.
We have been working to repair damage caused by our snow removal efforts over the winter. Contact Public Works if you have an area damaged by us in need of repair.
Wood ash from the lumber burn pile has been hauled to Dolby Landfill for the final time. The landfill is in the process of being capped and we will need to find other arrangements for our wood ash in the future.
**The contractor that grinds the brush has requested that nothing longer than 8 feet be brought to our brush pile. Anything longer than that plugs the grinder.
The compost pile is open for residents to drop off brush and yard waste. Bagged leaves must be emptied, and the bags disposed of properly.
As always, we are accepting all the cardboard, plastic jugs and tin cans that we can get for recycling. Help us keep as much waste as possible from ending up in the landfill.
The Cemetery operations are in full swing with spring burials.
The American Legion has partnered with students from Granite St School to place American Flags on the graves of our veterans.
The cemetery was fertilized and treated for grubs this spring. We will be reseeding the areas damaged by grubs last season.
Bryan Duprey, Director of Public Works

Wastewater Department
We would like to remind the residents of Millinocket to please NOT flush wipes, paper towels, grease, plastics, Q-tips or anything other than toilet paper into the sewer system. Even the "flushable" wipes will clog the sewer system. These items are causing extreme plugs to the sewer system and costly maintenance to our pumping stations. We would like to thank the residents for this consideration.
Jason Ingalls,
Wastewater Treatment Facility Superintendent

East Millinocket Police Department
To date, we have responded to more than 4,625 calls for service with almost 2,665 of those calls being in the Town of Millinocket. In the last couple of weeks, we have seen an increase in motor vehicle break-ins. We cannot stress enough the importance for people to lock their vehicles and homes. Typically, those who steal from motor vehicles will only take items from unlocked vehicles as they can quickly get in and out undetected. Thieves typically do not want to work hard and will target easy locations and items.
As the warmer weather is now upon us, our visiting traffic is starting to increase. We will continue to aggressively enforce motor vehicle laws to make our roadways safer from distracted drivers, aggressive drivers, and impaired drivers.
ATV Trails are now open around the Katahdin Region. EMPD will be doing enforcement details with the assistance of funding from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. We want to remind everyone that they need to follow ATV laws and use access routes as intended. ATVs are not meant as a mode of transportation around town to visit friends, run errands etc.
We are extremely excited to announce that on June 7th, K-9 Derby and Sgt Clayton will have completed all phases of their certifications and training and K-9 Derby will be a fully certified Patrol & Narcotics K-9. We are eager to have them back soon.
Police Chief Cameron McDunnah & Corporal Bradley Fitzgerald

Millinocket School Department
May 3rd was National School Lunch Hero Day! Our school nutrition staff work tirelessly to provide the children of our community with nutritious meals. The meals they provide greatly reduce food insecurity for children and their families. Please take a moment to thank a member of our team for their service to our community when you see them out and about: Donna Seamans, Jessica Freeman, Karen Birmingham, Tyler O’Brien, John Bouchard, Bob Albert, and Mark Lyons. Thank you for being our School Lunch Heroes!
Our teams served 4,117 breakfasts, and 4640 lunches in the month of April - 478 more meals than were served in April of 2023.
Staff Appreciation Week was May 6-10. Each day the staff members were given a gift of some kind, such as scones made by our cafeteria staff, Subway sandwiches and cookies, and gifts from the Central Office as well as from the Principal’s Office. We appreciate our staff and the hard work they do to support our students!
Granite Street School had 51 students and their families attend the Title I Family Night on May 2. The families were engaged with math, reading and craft activities. When they completed a station, they were given a sticker for a passport. We had door prize raffles - 4 families won $30 Hannaford gift cards and 4 students won “gift certificates” for the Scholastic Book Fair. Photos on right.
Granite Street School received an email and official letter from the Maine DOE on Thursday confirming that they will exit Tier III (CSI) status as of September 30, 2024! Special thanks to Karla Rutherford and our SIPs coach Susan Lamoreau for the work they did last year to get Granite Street School back on track and set things in motion for this year.
The Facilities Department has had a busy month with the completion and passing of the elevator and lift inspections, completion and passing of annual fire alarm system inspections at Stearns & Granite, installation of the new intercom system control panel in the Granite Street Principal’s Office, and expansion of the security camera system to include athletic complex.
Stearns softball and baseball seasons are well underway. The weather has finally decided to warm up. All four teams (Middle School and varsity) are working hard to improve and hopefully have the opportunity to play in post season play. Through a fundraiser, the softball team was able to purchase and install a new batting cage at their field. Many thanks to Aaron Welch for helping in the installation process. The baseball team is still raising money for a new turtle batting cage.
Stearns teacher Mrs. Anna Loome is at it again with her Outdoor Ed Class. They have enjoyed the opportunity of most recently going mountain biking and take advantage of the trails behind the school.
Dr. Shelley Lane, Superintendent of Schools
