This has been an exciting week at MPH! There's so much going on, in fact, we even took a look back at last week!
Take a look at just a few of the recent happening at MPH!

PEP RALLY!
The energy level was high last Friday, as Middle and Upper Schoolers gathered in the gym for a spirited pep rally, dubbed by Dean of Students Mr. Leclercq “a moment of semi-competitive silliness.” A number of students from each class eagerly raised their hands in hopes of being selected as volunteer participants in a couple of fun, silly contests: the “Ping-Pong Ball in a Spoon” relay race followed by Bryn Mawr’s “Oreo on Your Forehead” eating contest (the latter ending much more abruptly than in previous years, as sophomore Casey Beach was able to flip his Oreo up and catch it in his mouth — all in one swift motion). The brief rally further bolstered the day’s already-positive energy! And the crowd went wild when the Boys Varsity Soccer Team was announced!

HARVEST FESTIVAL!
Over the course of 2019-2020 school year, the new House System will coordinate four activities designed to increase divisional connections among the Lower, Middle, and Upper schools, as well as promote community engagement throughout the entire School. The year's first organized activity, the Harvest Festival, took place last Friday afternoon before the Boys Varsity Soccer game. Middle and Upper Schoolers from the four houses (Knight, Phoenix, Panther, and Trojan) planned and implemented fall-themed activities for the Lower Schoolers to enjoy in the area next to the Lower Field before the soccer game. From face painting to corn hole (or dressing up like a scarecrow or tossing miniature pumpkins, and so on!), these simple games and activities made for a fun afternoon and led to terrific attendance for the boys’ exciting victory that followed.

ALUMNI SOCCER GAME!
A number of alumni traveled back to campus, from near and far, last Saturday for the third Annual Alumni Soccer Game. MPH Varsity Soccer Coaches Bentley Hoke and Ridall each took responsibility for half of the alumni players. Awards were given at the end of the contest for farthest distance traveled (Alex Bearman ’98),
earliest graduation year (Trent Amond ’74, who also played the role of referee), and most-recent graduation year (Josh Hutko ’18). Current faculty member and MPH alumnus Jon Mangram
’10
also received recognition for his help in organizing the event. Erica Toyama and Director of Development Kelly Gillis-Rose then provided a special post-game moment as they held up a banner commemorating the 2007 Girls Varsity Soccer championship season and announced to those gathered that this particular team would be inducted into the MPH Athletic Hall of Fame later this year.

Flapjack FUNdraiser!
MPH’s Athletics Booster Club (ABC), led by current parent Amy Wildhack, made use of an Applebees venue (and chef!) Sunday morning for its annual “Flapjack FUNdraiser.” Student-athletes representing a number of varsity teams volunteered to sell tickets, play the role of host/hostess, take and fill drink orders, deliver stacks of flapjacks, and bus tables. Many thanks to Mrs. Wildhack (ABC president), to Mr. Evan Dreyfuss (ABC treasurer), to Athletic Director Jim Ryan, to the youthful volunteers who got up early on Sunday to raise money for MPH Athletics, to the many MPH-affiliated pancake patrons (parents, siblings, faculty, staff, administrators, coaches, and other friends of MPH), and to Applebees for supplying the facility and the cook!

Eighth Graders Learn About Graffiti
|
|
|
|
Eighth graders in Mrs. Henderson's glass took to the STEAM Park last week to learn about street art and asked some important questions...Who owns street art? The artist or the community? Is it protected under the first amendment? Is it actually art or a form of vandalism? Further discussions were about "Kilroy was Here," a doodle made popular in WWII, and the influences this may have had over street art.

Lower Schoolers Present at Assembly
Lower School Assembly occurs on Day 6 each cycle in the Coville Theater and provides a time to gather together second through fifth graders to share their work with their peers. Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade students make guest appearances in Assembly to present what they are learning, as well. The Lower School values opportunities to provide students with various and comfortable ways to practice their public speaking, share work, and answer questions from peers.

Bone Dissections in 7th Grade
|
As part of our study of the skeletal system, 7th graders dissected fresh bone sections and compared them with the dry bones they had observed last week. The sections of femurs provided an opportunity to observe compact bone, outer covering and marrow, and the vertebrae also contained spongy bone. While some were dismayed to learn that the bones were used to make soup stock, even the squeamish among our budding health professionals enjoyed this hands-on experience with the tissues we have been studying.

Concert Chorale Takes Over the Phoenix
|
Campus Shop volunteers and patrons — and any other passersby making their way through the Phoenix — were regaled by a part of the Upper School Concert Chorale who happened to be rehearsing with Ms. Dannan around the piano in the lobby midday on Monday. Concert Chorale is a performing arts elective; any student in Upper School is eligible to join. The group performs a variety of music from classical to pop to Broadway. It performs at the Winter and Spring Concerts and other small events throughout the school year. (We thank them for the beautiful entertainment, which readers can catch a glimpse of too!)
