Happy Women’s History Month!

Staff and participants in the Adult Medical Day Program decorated a bulletin board for Women’s History Month in honor of Judy Heumann, the “Mother of Disability Rights.” The League would like to celebrate the women of remarkable talent and compassion who have contributed to our 95 years of serving the Greater Baltimore Area!

My League Story: Multiple Sclerosis Day, Antwuan

Antwuan joined the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day Program in the Winter of 2021 purposely seeking a community he could contribute to and help build up. He understands the importance of connection. People who experience the same condition, like Multiple Sclerosis, have a unique perspective on how to help one another. In the MS Day Program at The League, participants spend time expressing feelings, sharing strategies, and venting about struggles.

Over the past year and a half, Antwuan has contributed to the program’s advocacy efforts by sharing positive mantras through MS coping cards and letters promoting MS awareness to large organizations. He inspires peers with his goal driven mindset. He is concerned with self-improvement therapies, justice for people with disabilities and improving the lives of his friends. He’s helped organize a pizza party and NFL season launch party for our groups. He buys small gifts and frequently voices that he just wants to “put a smile on someone’s face.”

This year, Antwuan is invited to The League’s Tastes, Toasts, & Triumphs as one of our guests of honor because he helps embody the mission of The League.

“I want everyone with MS to know that every day is a fight and struggle, but we can’t ever give up and stop fighting. We have to fight back with a smile because that’s something we can all do.”

Join Antwuan! Tickets Are Still Available to Tastes, Toasts, & Triumphs!

Join the G.E.M. (Give Every Month) Club to support the connection and sense of community that Antwuan is working so hard to create. Through the MS Day Program, members are able to share in the collective experience of overcoming daily struggles of living with MS and celebrating the positive things together, large and small. $15 a month would go towards party supplies for birthdays, special occasions, and NFL season launches that bring joy to the members. Because March is MS Awareness Month, the members want nothing more than to share their hope, resilience, and support for each other.

Program Highlights

Adults with disabilities and their caregivers come from all over the DMV region to get down and hang out on the second Saturday of every month! Staff and volunteers from neighboring schools, organizations, businesses, and universities transform our Cold Spring Lane Campus into an accessible and inclusive nightclub experience for individuals 18 and older. Guests can get their nails painted, beautify their bodies with temporary tattoos, play arcade games, sip mocktails, enjoy snacks and refreshments, dance to the hottest club music on two dance floors, and have their photo taken in the photobooth supported by The T. Rowe Price Foundation

Youth Autism Services

Children in the afterschool program have been busy celebrating history, holidays, and healthy lifestyles with their support counselors. February provided them with the opportunity to honor Black History Month by exploring members of the community currently exemplifying the culture. The kids celebrated Valentine’s Day with a party and marched in a NOLA-style parade for Mardi Gras. Weekly swimming sessions in the Malcolm Hecht Therapeutic Pool have resumed and everyone is looking forward to warmer weather for more outdoor fun!

Employer of Choice: Promoting Within

The League strives to employ the very best of the best so that our participants receive the highest quality of care. It is every organization’s dream to have their staff members learn, grow, and advance in their career paths; at The League, that dream is becoming a reality. Last month, three members of our Adult Medical Day staff were promoted to administrative and leadership roles on the team. Congratulations to Tiana, Jackie, and Danielle for working incredibly hard towards their goals and taking on greater responsibilities to better serve individuals with disabilities. The League is incredibly lucky to have such compassionate and ambitious employees to invest in.

A Concluding Note from Our President & CEO

Dear Friends of The League,

In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, I count myself extremely lucky to have your continued support as we return to pre-pandemic capacity and operations in our programs! Our classrooms, Wellness Center, and recreational spaces are once again full of artists, creative writers, dancers, athletes, and friends while our League buses are full of volunteers and contributing members of society seeking meaningful work and wages. If you have not already, I encourage you to read about the impact we made last year in The League’s Annual Report and I thank you for the role that you played in our success.

This month, we intend to celebrate all of the progress and accomplishments that our supporters and participants have made at Tastes, Toasts, & Triumphs, where we will honor Andy & Cherie Snyder and BGE, an Exelon Company for their long-standing commitment to The League’s mission. I hope to see you on March 25th; there is still time to purchase tickets! For those who cannot join us, our Event Committee has been assembling an exciting variety of online auction packages and experiences for you to bid on! Stay tuned for when the auction goes live on Sunday, March 19th!

Lastly, I would like to challenge YOU to participate in the Active Together Challenge with me this May. Check out my fundraising page to help me raise funds and awareness or start your own team! Until then, be well, and stay healthy! Sláinte!
