New Book on Alzheimer's Caregiving

Congratulations to our friend and colleague, Kanu (KC) Mehta on the publication of his new book.

"My Journey with Sumi"

KC writes . . .

In 2013, at the age of 59, my wife was diagnosed with younger onset Alzheimer’s disease. Sumi and I had been happily married for over 40 years but other than brief times of normal sickness I had little experience in caregiving. As a former engineering executive at Chrysler, my problem-solving analytical mind hoped for a misdiagnosis.

At first I wanted to change Sumi, but I learned that instead I needed to change myself to best meet Sumi’s needs.

These essays document the emotional turbulence I went through during the initial phases of Sumi’s disease and how I came to emotional acceptance and management through research and reflection.

I share this book to increase awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, reduce the stigma associated with it, and help others in similar situations find solace.

When to Call a Geropsychologist?

The job of the geropsychologist is to manage or alleviate emotional distress, which can be done in all sorts of ways across a wide spectrum of needs and activities. In the case of patients with dementia, treatment options and questions surrounding safety and quality of life, as well as shifting family dynamics, can create havoc; a gerospychologist can help patients and families traverse this sometimes long and confusing journey. Measuring Dementia Caregiving Styles

Our goal is to develop a questionnaire that can quickly understand how caregivers approach dementia-related care and use this information to tailor supports and services to each caregiver’s unique needs.

We are looking for unpaid caregivers currently providing some form of physical assistance, emotional support, or financial assistance for a family member or friend who has a doctor’s diagnosis of an age-related dementia.

Participation involves a 75-minute survey with the option to complete a 20-minute follow-up survey. Participants receive a $30 gift card for the first survey plus $10 for the second survey.
