Spring has Sprung and it's now time to get those boats cleaned up for the summer. We do have a pressure washer that you're welcome to borrow from us, call the office for more details.

Thistle Short Districts
Seventeen boats participated, including five regional boats that camped at the Lakewood marina a short tow ride south on the lake. This event also marked the first regatta without top PNW sailor Wayne Pignolet, who tragically passed away suddenly last month. Wayne’s beautifully restored woodie, MaHOGany (#376) was sailed by Wayne’s brother and longtime crew, Jerry Pignolet, as well as Jerry and Wayne's sister Nancy Sauer and family friend and expert crew Amy Thompson.
The wind forecast for both days was lackluster, but after a delay on a Saturday morning a decent northerly came down the lake and the RC pushed us through five multi-lap races in what became a building breeze. Race five finished just below planning conditions. Throughout the day the racing was tight, the mark roundings crowded, and every point contested. Dinner on Saturday night provided plenty of beer, pizza, and discussion of the day’s highlights. As the sun came out on Sunday the wind died in the middle of race 6, and racing was finished for the weekend.
Winning the regatta was the #3677 sailed by Jacob, Jonathan, and Tricia Posner – both the top finishing family boat and the only boat helmed by a High school sailor. Just one point behind, finishing in second place was new-to-Seattle sailor Kurban Ali in Strange Bird, #3794, sailing with crew Clara Poffenburger. There was a three-way tie for third place, with the tiebreaker going to Lady Weatherly (#3669), sailed by Jenny Borshoff, Graham Vaughan, and Shyah Miller.
Thanks to JD Reddaway (#3883) for organizing the regatta with help from Wayne Balsiger (#3664), District Governor Julie Irwin, Chuck Queen and Fleet Captain Tony Blackner among others. Melanie Edwards ran the tow line with Steve Hauck in his runabout, Les Hillebrand fired up the grill after racing on Sunday. Thanks to Andrew Shroyer and Lakewood Marina for allowing launching and camping for out of town Thistles. All in all, classic spring Seattle racing in a highly competitive fleet, friendly fleet—what could be better!

Next week, paddle enthusiasts from around the globe will converge for the much-anticipated Seventy48 paddle race. This unique and challenging event spans 70 miles, and participants have just 48 hours to complete the course. Starting in Tacoma, Washington, and ending in Port Townsend, this race promises excitement, and endurance.
The Seventy48 race is open to all human-powered watercraft, including kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and stand-up paddleboards. The event kicks off at 7 PM, and paddlers will navigate the waters of Puget Sound, testing their skills and stamina. With no support boats allowed, racers must rely on their wits and physical endurance to make it to the finish line.
Meet Travis Booth
Among the competitors this year was Travis Booth, a seasoned paddler known around here for never wearing shoes. Travis is one of our Liveaboards at Lakewood and owner of Gym Smithy. This lunatic paddled 70 miles on a SUP and came in 1ST!

No Swimming in the Marinas
Taking a dip in the marina might seem like a good idea, especially when the sun's blazing and the water looks so inviting. But Marinas are NOT a place to be swimming.
Marinas are busy places with boats constantly coming and going. Even if the boats are parked, there are still risks from propellers and other underwater obstacles that can hurt you. Plus, marinas have electrical systems for boats, and sometimes these can leak electricity into the water, which is super dangerous and can even cause electric shock drowning (ESD). Not fun!
Stick to approved swimming areas where you know the water is clean and safe, and you can have a great time without any worries.
