Finding Hope Through Housing: Meet Ruth

In 2018 Ruth’s life was upended when her local housing voucher was taken away. After exhausting opportunities for temporary housing, Ruth sought out shelter assistance to provide a safe space for her family. That’s when she came across Community Action Partnership of Orange County (CAP OC).

With CAP OC’s support, Ruth sought out local resources and secured permanent housing for herself and her family.

Sharing that “because of the help I got, I feel safe”, Ruth’s newfound stability, coupled with continued access to the OC Food Bank and CAP OC financial empowerment services, have given her the tools needed to not only provide for her family but look towards a brighter future.

Ruth is now just 2 courses away from securing her degree in Health and Human Services and hopes to return to her previous work in counseling while serving as an advocate for those experiencing homelessness.

We are thrilled to have played a part in Ruth's success and wish the best to her and her family.

Addressing Rising Utility Costs in Orange County

CAP OC’s Utility Assistance Program has seen increased applicants in recent years as COVID-19 support programs have come to an end and electricity rates have risen significantly throughout Orange County.

As we approach September, our program’s busiest month of the year, we are faced with limited funding and additional applicants. To address these concerns, our team has implemented a priority plan to identify our most vulnerable participants, while continuing to provide services to as many Orange County families as possible.

Additionally, through partnerships with Southern California Edison’s (SCE) and others, we are able to provide referral services to many Orange County families looking for assistance. Offering programs like Medical Baseline Allowance and Energy Saving Assistance, SCE’s support provides a lifeline for those we may be unable to serve.

As rates rise and families seek assistance, we are grateful for our referral partners and will continue to seek out additional opportunities to enhance our Utility Assistance services. Together, we can ensure no family is left struggling to pay their monthly bills.
