LGA Ladies Golf Association
A limited group showed up Tuesday to “practice” with the last of the big cups at Members and tried the tee markers which were decidedly different. Play was as from the White, Green and Teal tees, making for some interesting techniques in the AB/AB and CD/CD two best ball Shamble format.  Team members finished the hole with their own ball from the team’s best tee shot.
AB Flight team winners were Brenda Downing, Deb Bevenour, Diane Lusk , and Stacy Pontarollo . Taking home Second place prize in this flight were Sherry Blackwook Jackie Schumacher, Sandy Floyd and Lynn Joesten . In the CD Flight, congratulations goes to the team of Evie Pizer, Paige Stephenson, Licia Daly and Linda Wilson.  Second place to Patty Walsh, Becky Irwin, Dotty McEnaney and Carolyn Sherwin.
Closest to the pin honors went to Judy Berg with a 5’2” putt on hole #8 and then on hole #12, Jeanne Sturtevant had a birdie putt.

Rumor has it that Members will be done with those fairway greens and ten inch cups and we will be back on the new greens for next week’s game – two ball best ball with AB/AB and CD/CD teams all playing from the teal tees. If interested, sign up on GolfNet BEFORE MIDNIGHT ON SATURDAY.

MGA -- Men's Golf Association
In a stunningly quick turnaround, the Members Club greens were declared ready for play on Thursday. The SJMGA was the first group on the newly repaired greens. I’m delighted to say the results were fantastic. From what the conditions were 5 weeks ago to what they were Thursdayis indeed a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Troon staff. Especially deserving plaudits are Dustin Strickland , Director of Agronomy; Grayson Grainger , Course Superintendent and Kent Silhanek , General Manager.

The SJMGA played an individual, flighted Gross and Net Tournament with 4 low gross and 4 low net winners per flight. It required a lot of scoring calculations as there were 108 players in the four flights.  Matt Rauth, the Troon Tournament Director and his assistants did their usual outstanding job.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Softball
Band of Players
. Last year, the St James Jimmies were formed with the Brunswick County 50 + Men's Softball League and were told by many not to expect a win for several years. Most of the Jimmies players had not played for 20-30 years, but they had enough heart and passion for the game to give it a try. Well, they were winless in the fall play, but bounced back to a 11-5 record this spring. You heard of the "Band of Brothers" and now this team seemed to evolve into a "Band of Players". Acquiring five new players along with mixing with their current players produced a winning ticket. Adding two gifted assistant coaches and forging an effective lineup with appropriate field positioning was also the right combination for the Jimmies . Individual player statistics were also kept on each player.

This is about softball players who stepped up to take a chance to make a difference that could only be accomplished by a "Band of Players".  They all seem to embrace this fact and look forward to continuing their journey in the fall and beyond.
Bowling
We look forward to another fun season of friendly competition starting in late September. Anyone interested in joining a team or being a sub can contact the league president, Mark Zaenglein (mzaenglein@ec.rr.com) to sign up or for more details.

St James Model Yacht Racing Club
The Nirvanas came out in full force on Tuesday for Race Officer Tony Defillips ’ course, starting again at the yellow/green mark to the inside buoys. A northerly wind cutting across the pond made the two north legs at the 3-2 mark and the orange/blue mark a real challenge for the nine skippers. Firsts were spread amongst many - two wins for Bill Miller , while Mark Hamer, Harry Howard, Garrett VanKoughnett and Judy Rubin each had a first.  Harry added two seconds while Judy, Mark, and Bill each had one.

Garrett VanKoughnett wasted no time on his return to racing capturing three firsts and three seconds in the Dragon 95’s in a field of four skippers. First time in the winner’s circle was new member Larry Rogers who had two firsts in the fourth and fifth race, both almost too close to call.  Rob McKinley picked up the other first place win as he is back to skippering after missing most of the spring series.

The top  Nirvana & Dragon 65 Class  Summer Series Skippers after 3 starts:
  1. Karl Thomsen          .9028
  2. Mark Hamer             .8992
  3. Harry Howard          .8982
These skippers are within .0036 points - how close is that??

The top  Dragon 95 Class  Summer Series Skippers after 3 starts:
  1. Dick Denzler                1.0000
  2. Garrett VanKoughnett  .9189
  3. Peter Rubin                   .8651

On Thursday, the Club held their Annual Fire Cracker Match one-day Regatta. This is an elimination race where two boats compete against each other around the championship course in a double elimination format. Race Official Garrett VanKoughnett designed a course with starboard turns on the three, four, and yellow buoys which was new to all participants, making for a fun day of racing. Losers in the first race go to a second bracket where that winner can advance back to the top bracket, making it possible to lose a race in the first round and finish as the Champion!

Twelve skippers showed up and drew numbers for placement of the races. Lots of cheering, jeering and joking. The defending 2017 winner, Judy Rubin, failed in her attempt to repeat, losing in the semi-final race to eventual winner Karl Thomsen . Finishing in second was Tony deFillippis , while Carolyn Sherwin finished third.

This event was so much fun that on the August Agenda will be a Columbus Day Match one-day Regatta for the Dragon 95’s . The bi-monthly meeting will be held at the Member’s Club on Tuesday, August 7.

St. James Ping Pong Club
The ping pong club has more than 80 members and doubles play is every Monday 6:30-8:30 and every Wednesday 3:00 – 5:00 at the Community Center. It is open to all age groups and all levels of play.  AARP considers ping pong one of the best activities for people as they age – light on the knees, not hard on the heart, and provides a genuine social setting.  Come see for yourself - the St. James Ping Pong Club provides tables and balls (extra paddles are available for first time players to use).

If you are a beginner and wonder about joining, we have several players who will help with reviewing proper serving and other techniques. We can have a table devoted to practice and instruction sessions as needed and requested.

Pickleball
Thanks to all who came to the Pickleball Get-Together! We had about 90 people plus 122 by email all interested in playing Pickleball. Thanks also to Greg Rymer , our Pickleball instructor, who gave a great demonstration of ‘How to Play Pickleball’. Next week we will meet with the tennis president and vice president to get information on how to start our organization. It was so helpful of them to offer to meet with us. We are working on getting everyone’s names and info sent out, so we can include newcomers in games. Feel free to join in and contact us if you would like to add your information to the list of players.
