"Sacred Spaces, Innovative Places" From Pastor Rob
The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship has published two volumes of the short book Sacred Spaces, Innovative Places: Reimagining Church Property and Facility as Assets. Hillside Church is featured in the last chapter of Volume 2. You can pick up a copy in the church office as long as they last. Or, you can download the booklet here.
The simplest explanation for why our church might be featured in a publication intended to inspire other churches is our willingness to say “Yes,” or “Let’s pray about this,” when new ideas for ministry arise. We never just shoot down a proposed idea with an abrupt “No!” Sometimes after prayer and discernment, God leads us to decline ideas or opportunities, but even then, it’s not necessarily a hard “no.” It’s closer to, “not at this time.” READ MORE

Our New Bench
outdoor bench
As you can imagine, running a Food Pantry generates a lot of waste. Fortunately, we can recycle much of our plastic, cardboard, styrofoam and paper.
Roger Sit, our ‘cardboard manager’, makes sure all of our cardboard and paper are placed in the blue recycling bins for weekly pick-up by the county.
Diane Asbill takes the plastic and styrofoam to Bethany UMC in Durham. Bethany UMC drops off the plastic to NexTrex, a company that recycles plastic to form benches and other items. For every 500 pounds of plastic collected, Bethany gifts a bench to a non-profit. As thanks for our support of this ministry, Bethany gifted us with the latest bench from NexTrex - check out our new bench! We can’t wait to set it outside and “sit a spell”.
A HUGE thank you to Bethany United Methodist Church!!
