A message from Jasmine E. Sessoms, Founder of She Can Win

Black Women are on trend… the support of Black Women is seen far and wide.. but what does that support look like?

We have elected a Black Woman to the 2nd Highest Office in the land- and yet I have been reading the headlines of VP Harris doesn’t do much, or why hasn’t VP Harris taken a stronger stance on(insert literally anything at all) and it got me to wondering, when did we ever care this much about a VP candidate. I couldn’t tell you one thing Uncle Joe accomplished during his 8 year VP tenure and now he is elected to President.

I mentioned this fact in mixed company (Black and White Men and Women) and asked do we really support VP Harris, and the collective thought was- we elected her didn’t we? America supports her.

This sentiment bothers me- Black Women are running for office at record numbers, currently lead 8 of the major cities and hold 23 seats in the House of Representatives. As we approach majors races in 2022- we collectively have to think about how do we really show up and show out for Black Women. What is the support they really need? Is it just voting for them? Is it donating to their campaign?

We also have to stop the unfair standards America holds black women to because there is a reckoning coming. We see it in the sports world. Simone Biles, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, and most recently Venus Williams. They are saying we will prioritize ourselves and you can keep your fake support.

Black Women are prioritizing themselves and as always we are waiting for the rest of the world to catch up. We aren’t waiting for anyone to save us, because we save ourselves- BUT we don’t want to! We shouldn’t have to.

So the next time you say: “I support Black Women” really think about what that means.
