Knewsletter Vol. 5

This is one of the best times of year in Northern California! We get our two weeks of Indian Summer and we like to milk every last sun-kissed, crazy-weather, wonderful moment out of it. What are you doing to enjoy the season?

The Yard was abuzz with Big Boat preparations and we're looking forward to seeing them all zipping around the Bay this weekend!

We've got some more fun things to share with you - an oldie but goodie article, some kind praise, a smokin' deal on Propspeed to keep you moving FAST, and lots more!
FROM THE BILGE
by Paul Kaplan

I was recently practicing my presentation in front of a KKMI team member for the upcoming International Boatbuilders' Exhibition and Conference (IBEX). The presentation is about environmental compliance and how KKMI strives to raise the bar in our industry. The content reminded my coworker of an article about KKMI that appeared in Professional Boatbuilder Magazine. I dare say she's right and I couldn't have written it better myself.

If you haven't already read it, do yourself a favor and take a peek at this article that explains in quite extensive detail, the upgrades made to KKMI in Sausalito to make it an award-winning boat yard.  Read more.

KIND PRAISE

Alan Almquist of the Northern California Fleet of the Classic Yacht Association, had some very nice things to say about KKMI in their recent newsletter. We thought we'd share.

North Star II developed a leak around the strut blocks awhile ago and it was time to see about getting it fixed. But where to go? For many years I had hauled the boat in different places in the Delta but since I was now in the Bay I thought it was time to try and find a new boat yard that was closer to home. Two thoughts, actually three, came to mind.  Read more...

MEET THE CREW

Introducing Dan Hill

If you've been to the Point Richmond Chandlery, you may have noticed some new blood - meet Dan Hill. Dan started working with us in the beginning of 2016.

Dan grew up in Western Pennsylvania where he began his love for boating on the many rivers and lakes. It wasn't until he moved to Santa Cruz after college that he truly realized his passion for sailing and ocean racing. He stumbled upon a job at Santa Cruz Yachts building the famous Santa Cruz 52. He worked his way up from sanding wood trim to Commissioning and Warranty Manager. He also raced on the company SC52 up and down the California Coast.   Read more...

THIS MONTH'S SPECIAL

This man covered himself in Propspeed and swam around the world... NOT ONE BARNACLE!

Ok, not really, but this stuff is amazing!

YOU GOTTA PLAY TO WIN!

Last edition of the Knewsletter we asked you to answer a trivia question. Since we didn't get any responses, no one is going to be able to claim a set of KKMI dock lines... pity!

QUESTION:
In reference to the Pac Cup -- what do the current Pac Cup record holder and the past record holder have in common?
ANSWER:
They both left from the docks at KKMI!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
For better or worse, dealing with toxic materials is part of operating a maritime service facility. The range of toxicity is quite varied. Some toxins are very harmful to humans even at small levels of exposure. At the other end of the spectrum there are toxins which are modestly harmful to some aquatic species when exposed at higher levels. Knowing what is highly or less toxic and how these materials are to be properly disposed of is mission critical at KKMI.

For example, pressure washing the bottom of vessels produces a wet mixture of bottom paint and marine growth, which requires special handling and disposal. Each year tons of material are generated.

Question: Last year KKMI's two locations paid to dispose of how many tons of this waste?

A)     Less than 5 tons
B)     5 to 10 tons
C)    10 to 15 tons
D)    Over 15 tons

Send your answer to marianne@kkmi.com. We will select two winners randomly from all correct answers received. Two lucky winners get a set of KKMI dock lines!

LIFE AFTER THE KYARD

After a visit to the Kyard in May - Donald Lindsay shared these shots of he and his boat Sahali at Ayala Cove & Angel Island on Labor Day.

"We bought her while working up in British Columbia. She was already named, (King Neptune doesn't like for you to change a vessel's name) Sahali means "high place as in heaven" in Chinook. We thought that was a great name so we kept it.

I think she is a very pretty girl, she has a beautiful birdseye maple interior with teak and cherry decks (You must love your boat, she will know if you don't!). She is a 1977 custom built aluminum full keel cutter and had a refit in '05 just before I bought her. We have had her from Vancouver to Ensenada and brought her up to the Bay from San Diego in May of this year as I am working in the area. She lives in Brickyard Cove for now.  She has been to Hawaii and Sea of Cortez by the former owners. I have upgraded her sails and rigging as well as the electronics.

I have 40 years in power line work and hope to retire soon and head south with her, first to Mexico with the  Ha Ha Fleet then possible a Pacific loop."
- Donald Lindsay owner of Sahali

Proud to have been a part of your journey! Fair winds to you and Sahali!

Please send your photos -  We'd love to hear about your adventures!
KYARDOG OF THE MONTH

Meet Barnacle. Barnacle is Caleb's family companion. Caleb is one of the craftsmen here at KKMI. Barnacle loves raw bones from Berkeley Bowl. He also loves to eat barnacles and mussel shells he finds on the dock. He prefers the beach but tolerates the boat because he knows that there is a frolic in his future when he's aboard. He loves to share food with people working on their boats on Saturdays - so if you see him, be sure to pull up a chair!

SEE YOU NEXT TIME!

Until we pop back into your inbox... we hope to see you around the Bay or in the Kyard!
