KNEWSLETTER Vol. 17

It's Boat Show time BABY! That means it's time to get yourself down to the Craneway Pavilion in Point Richmond and wander the halls for various and sundry boating wares. On your way to lay down a "BOAT Unit"* or two on gear and equipment for your favorite pastime, visit us at KKMI's booth and check out our  "Little Shop of Horrors!"   We're bringing our showcase of some of the most horrific mishaps and boating blunders that have passed through our Kyard. Seeing other people's blunders just might save you a "BOAT Unit" or two!

Hope to see you there!
* A BOAT unit stands for "Break Out Another Thousand" in reference to how expensive boats can be when you don't properly take care of them. See our Knewsletter challenge for a little more fun with this one.
FROM THE BILGE
by Paul Kaplan

I f you didn't know this already, I have a boating habit....it's actually more like an addiction. There, I said it. This addiction began at an early age. Although I did not grow up in a sailing family our home was near Lake Merced in San Francisco and this became my "playground" where I discovered my lifelong passion...boats. Even to this day,  while we're not in the market to buy a boat, I still enjoy going to the Boat Show.  Read more.

WHAT WE ARE READING

Our friends at Boat U.S. have an article in their April issue with advice from associate editor and accredited marine surveyor, Mark Corke. While the article is largely written for new or aspiring boat owners, it includes relevant information that any self-proclaimed boater should know! Read more.

BOOK READING
Saturday, April 14th at 4pm
Book Passage - 100 Bay Street in Sausalito

One of our Sausalito customers has a new book out! Join the author for a book reading at Book Passage in Sausalito this coming Saturday, April 14th at 4pm.

IMTRA PRODUCTS - PRODUCT OF INTEREST

At KKMI we enjoy working with top companies in the marine industry, one such company being IMTRA. While you may not know the IMTRA name, you're likely familiar with their products, such as Side Power bow & stern thrusters, Muir anchor winches or Lumishore underwater lighting.

Underwater Lighting
While some might think underwater lighting is only for power boats, they can be equally attractive and VERY functional on a sailboat. Lighting up the area where your swimming ladder is mounted is a great example. So, when planning your next bottom job, you might want to consider adding a light or two. This coming month we are offering the opportunity for your boat to be featured at IMTRA's and KKMI's web site with our installation of an underwater lighting system from Lumishore. Check out their web site ...and then give us a call. It will be illuminating!

BOAT SHOW IS COMING!
April 19-22
Mark your calendars - it's just a month away. We'll be there and we would love to see you!

CHECKING IN ON RANDALL REEVES

Randall is coming home! Latitude 38 coined it as "The longest shakedown cruise ever." We'll call it a reboot, a comeback, a scratch that -- reverse it. Whatever we call it, we will be happy to have Randall pull back into the Bay. We'll keep the light on for ya' Randall. Safe travels!

WE'RE HIRING!
We are so proud of the people who work here - being a family-run business, we embrace the family vibe. If you know someone who would be a good fit in our team of craftspeople, we would love the opportunity to meet with them.

We currently have an opening for a Marine Electrician/Electronics expert. If you or someone you know fits that bill, please send them our way!

We are also looking down the road for a woodworking apprentice. If you're interested in woodworking and have some experience in that area, give us a holler and let's talk!

LAST KNEWSLETTER CHALLENGE & WINNER

CHALLENGE:

Identify this part that that's been severed in two to show it's corroded interior. It comes to us straight from our "Wall of Shame" or "Little Shop of Horrors!" Come by the Boat Show and see it for yourself.

ANSWER:
Calcium build up on your head system. Liquid is the only thing that would be getting through that hole. When your head stops working, it's time to replace it. It's a messy job, but that's what we're here for. Maintenance and prevention are the key. Look into treatments that will prevent calcium build up.

WINNER! Keith Somers. Keith was able to properly identify the corroded head compontents.  Nice job, Keith! We hope you enjoy your KKMI Rigger's Bag!

Here is Keith and his wife sailing their last boat off the shore of Santa Cruz

KKMI SIGHTINGS

It was an honor to host the California Yacht Broker's Association for a day of information and fun.

Some folks from Department of Boating and Waterways were on hand to help the brokers better understand regulations.

Getting a bunch of yacht brokers in a room, there's bound to be funny stories.

The tour of KKMI is always fun. Everyone is always so amazed by one of the first in-mast rigs that's hanging in our rig shop.

Construction on the greenhouse barge is blooming!

It's always fun to stroll around the yard... you never know what you'll come across... Miguel & Roberto C. goofing off for the camera...

Happy Birthday Miguel!
