CHALLENGE:

They sailed far and wide and finally made landfall... did they ever! What local landmark is this that's masquerading as a pirate ship?

ANSWER:

Not the Balcutha which several of you suggested... that's an actual boat in Aquatic Park. It's none other than the Sutro Tower!

And this editor learned a little bit of local knowledge. There is a nickname for the tower. Folks say it looks like an apparatus that you would use to clip the end of - cover the children's ears - a marijuana cigarette. I won't say the word exactly but it rhymes with "Coach Flip"
