SCARY REPAIR OF THE MONTH

Ashley and Greg, owners of a Baba 35 who had been waiting out a weather window in the San Francisco Bay, found out that waiting can sometimes bring good luck. They had recently had their rig "tuned" at a location much further to our south so they weren't expecting any issues. They were wrapping up some deck work when they heard an unfamiliar sound on their boat. After spending a fair amount of time finding the source, they discovered that one of the lower stays was loose and its accompanying chain plate had snapped in half. The root cause was corrosion on the stainless where the deck meets the plate. In order to keep their mast upright, they removed the chain plates in sections and replaced them with new ones they had built at KKMI. All the new chain plates are back in place, and they are again waiting for their new weather window before they continue their voyage north.

As you can see, the corrosion was not visible from the deck. Thankfully this was caught before they headed out again!

CAPTAIN Q'S QUAGMIRES

The new Coors Light fueled bow thrusters just hit the market...

Sometimes you just can't get far enough away from one another aboard a boat...

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater... or with just water wings...

Some sage advice...

Not really a quagmire, but let's all hope we can achieve this level of focus, determination, and just outright adorableness at least once in our lifetime!

KNEWSLETTER CHALLENGE

CHALLENGE:

Don't worry, it can't suck your blood: a line that runs under the back edge of a modern mainsail shares what name with a parasitic animal?

Simply reply to this email with your answer. No need to change the title. If you have one, include a photo of yourself, preferably on a boat, that we can use in the event you're our big winner! Please tell us a little about what's happening in the photo. You will be added to all entries and the winner will be selected randomly from all entries. Good luck!

The winner will be notified ahead of time and announced in our next Knewsletter.

QUESTION/ANSWER:

What is the nautical term used to describe crewmembers who use the weight of their bodies to help balance a boat and keep it from overly heeling during a race? RAIL MEAT!
