District 10 News
Brought to you by Councilman Clayton H. Perry
Howdy!

Happy Independence Day weekend! I hope everyone has a great and safe time celebrating. Our office will be closed on July 4th in observance of the holiday. This month we will be hosting our Back to School event on July 23rd at the Blessed Angels Community Center located at 14078 Nacogdoches Rd, at 9 a.m. We hope to see you there!

There are some great events planned around the community this weekend, including some annual Fourth of July parades. If you go out to celebrate, please do so responsibly. Remember that the use of fireworks in the City of San Antonio is illegal and can result in a Class C Misdemeanor which can carry a fine of up to $2,000. If you are injured or someone you know is injured because of fireworks, please call 911. If you see reckless use of fireworks that presents an immediate risk of bodily injury or fire hazard, please call the SAPD non-emergency number 210-207-7273. Y’all be safe, respect your neighbors and have fun. It’s a great time to remember that despite our challenges, we are still a great nation, and it’s worth celebrating!

Please mark your calendars for the next District 10 Community Meeting set for July 18, at 7 p.m. at the Tool Yard (Northeast Service Center) located at 10303 Tool Yard. We have a great agenda planned with presentations from the Baptist Health System, SAPD SAFFE and neighbors to discuss Northside Neighbors on Patrol, the City’s Ready to Work initiative, and two of our volunteer commissioners – Marc Whyte on Zoning and Gavin Nichols on the Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs will provide us with updates. We hope to see you all there!

Do you have ideas for District 10? If so, the District 10 Team would like to attend your next HOA meeting, or if you'd like to sign up for our Roadshow, we'd be happy to help set that up with you. Please email District10@sanantonio.gov with the date, time, and point of contact to schedule our attendance at your next HOA meeting. I look forward to hearing from you!

As always, thank you for being active community members and leaders here in District 10. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if we may be of any assistance to you. The District 10 team is on hand and available to address your needs and concerns.

San Antonio International Airport Supports the Children of Fallen Heroes

San Antonio International Airport will welcome more than 60 children of fallen heroes from throughout Texas and the United States. All of these children come from families where a parent was lost, making the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of their country or community, while serving in the United States military or as a First Responder. The children will be participating in the Echo Hills Ranch Children of Fallen Heroes Summer Camp program and will all gather at the SAT USO prior to departing for the 10-day camp. The organization provides support to the children of military service members or first responder who lost their lives while serving in the line of duty. The program has assisted more than 1,000 children and hundreds of families. While gathering at the airport’s USO, the children will enjoy pizza, snacks, and assorted food and beverages, along with entertainment provided by a DJ, magician, and caricature artist. Visitors will include therapy dogs from the airport’s Pups-n-Planes program as well as PAWS for Service. Upon departure, the bus full of campers will be given a traditional water-cannon salute by the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Department.
Division 7 Solutions, Inc Celebrates 35 Years!!
July 4th, 2022, is an extraordinary date for Division 7 Solutions, Inc, a Texas Corporation.

"That date represents the completion of our 35th year in business. We have grown from a spare bedroom in my home, with a Walmart card table for a desk, to an Internationally recognized and Multiple awarded firm, including two (2) City of San Antonio, Build San Antonio Green Awards.

I thank the Architectural & Design Professional community, who recognized the value and knowledge we bring and allowed us to work with you. We also thank the many building supply manufacturers that allowed us to partner with them to develop new technologies and solve sustainable building construction problems. We have gone head-to-head with many Fortune 500 competitors, and that competition made us a better business; they too are thanked.

To the employees who have passed through this firm, you, too, share in this long-term success.

So, many thanks to all for contributing to our success and longevity!"

-Roy Schauffele

Applications Being Accepted for ARPA 4 Arts Grant Program
The City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture announced that the application window to receive recovery grants funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) for the San Antonio arts community opened today. The ARPA 4 Arts Grant Program will distribute a total of $4 million to San Antonio arts nonprofits and $1 million to San Antonio artists who were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now through July 29, 2022, individual artists can apply to receive up to $7,500, while eligible arts nonprofits will be granted based on budget size and the communities they serve. The program is expected to assist at least 133 San Antonio individual artists and 40 arts nonprofits.

Eligible individual artists must live in San Antonio and be a professional artist for the last three years who derived a portion of their income from their artistic activity and demonstrate COVID-19’s impact to their artistic career. Eligible arts nonprofits must be based in San Antonio, have been providing arts programming for the last three years and demonstrate COVID-19’s impact to their business. Scoring for the grant program includes a focus on equity, as COVID-19 disproportionately impacted specific communities more than others including low-income communities, communities of color and women.

The COVID-19 pandemic immediately devastated San Antonio’s creative economy, causing organizations and businesses that house artistic programming to shutter their doors, cancel performances and exhibitions, cut budgets and reduce personnel. According to the SABER Research Institute, San Antonio’s creative economy job loss during the pandemic was 18% and estimated losses for nonprofits are $71 million as of January 2021. In addition, Americans for the Arts research notes that the arts sector is recovering slower than other industries, with COVID-19 continuing to disrupt in-person programming, audience size and charitable giving.

“In the midst of the pandemic and facing significant hardships, so many of San Antonio’s artists and cultural organizations provided free virtual programming to keep our community connected when we could not safely gather in person,” said Department of Arts & Culture Interim Executive Director Krystal Jones. “San Antonio’s creative industry is now, and still, very much in a recovery phase. The funding provided by ARPA 4 Arts is critical to supporting the arts sector that supported us, so artists and organizations can move forward and continue to increase the quality of life of residents and visitors through arts and culture.”

The ARPA 4 Arts Grant Program will accept applications June 29 – July 29, 2022, through the Department of Arts & Culture’s GoSmart application portal. For full details and requirements, visit www.SanAntonio.gov/arts.

The Institute of Texan Cultures Centennial 2068: Community Stakeholder Visioning process steering committee released its draft report today for public input. The report includes three feasible scenarios to advise UTSA leadership on the future of the ITC: relocate the ITC from the Texas Pavilion and Hemisfair district, relocate the ITC from the Texas Pavilion and remain in the Hemisfair district, or remain in the Texas Pavilion in its current location.

Today through July 12, UTSA will host a Community Conversation enabling the public to provide feedback about each of the three scenarios.

An online survey, available in English and Spanish, will guide the feedback process.

Tips from SAWS on keeping your water bill down this summer:
Feeling that summer scorch? As another dry summer hits San Antonio, your drought-hardy landscape will stay healthy and sail through the season with no more than once-a-week watering.

While San Antonio is water secure with diverse water sources and a strong commitment to conservation, our population is growing fast, and many new homes have irrigation systems.

Reasonable lawn watering rules help conserve a significant amount of water and working together to follow Stage 2 rules help us stay out of Stage 3 watering rules.

Remember your watering day is based on the last digit of your address when you are using sprinklers, an irrigation system, or a soaker hose since we are in mandatory Stage 2 watering rules.

Watering hours are between 7-11 a.m. and 7-11 p.m. on your designated day.

You can still water with a hand-held hose at any time on any day. Giving plants a refreshing drink right at their roots can help keep some green in your wallet as hand watering uses much less than a sprinkler system.

A typical hose will use 300 gallons in 30 minutes while irrigation systems can use 2,000 gallons or more each time they run. That means you’ll easily double or triple your water bill, even if you water just once a week with the irrigation system.

Summer water-saving tips:
· Skip shady beds and water grass in full sun.
· Leaves often look wilted on summer afternoons. Water if you see it in the morning.
· Stressed lawns may have yellow or folded leaves, but Bermuda grass and zoysia can turn brown, go dormant and recover with rain. Find more Stage 2 watering rules are at www.saws.org/whentowater and tips for South Texas gardening at www.GardenStyleSA.com/summer-watering.
