Welcome to the first edition of the SWIL Education-Workforce Connection. In this monthly newsletter, we plan to keep you informed of the various activities that the Leadership Council of Southwestern Illinois is involved in, particularly those activities that relate to education.

PC's for People Grand Opening

New Store in Metro East

The statewide Connect Illinois Computer Equity Network reached a major milestone on April 9 with the grand opening of the PCs for People Metro East retail and distribution space. This facility will serve as a local retail storefront and digital literacy training space, a regional computer distribution hub, and a place to donate computers and equipment.

News from Scott AFB

SWIL Receives Award Third Time

On April 8, 2021, The Leadership Council was honored to receive the Abilene Award and Scott AFB. The Abilene Trophy is awarded annually to the community in Air Mobility Command that is most supportive of its local Air Force Base. The Abilene Military Affairs Committee from Abilene, Texas celebrated the win with Southwestern Illinois at a social held by the Commander, 375th Air Mobility Wing.

STEM Partnership

The Leadership Center has partnered with Union Pacific as part of our Building Workforce 2030 initiative.

This project is part of the Leadership Council’s Building Workforce 2030. The purpose of the Building Workforce 2030 program is to inform and prepare future and current workforce and change perceptions and create awareness of skilled careers. We have seen the Building Workforce 2030 program generate substantial results in the number of students, their parents, and underserved residents entering career technical trades certificate and job training programs, as well as STEM/STEAM career pathways if not for this program.

Leadership Council Welcomes New Team Members

Andrea Beyer - Administrative Assistant

Has a love for hiking with family, watching her daughter do ballet, trying new restaurants, reading as many books as she has time for, going to escape rooms and analyzing new movies with friends, and enjoys spending time with her various church activities at First Baptist of Fairview Heights. Recently rescued 2 kittens(now 6 months old) and currently enjoying their daily mischief.

Prior to coming to the Leadership Center, Andrea served as an Administrative Assistant at a local Manufacturing facility in Belleville for the past 2 years. She was a preschool teacher for 9 years at local area daycares and teacher assistants at area school districts.

Andrea resides in O'Fallon, IL with her Husband and Daughter.

Bruce McLaughlin - Grants & Education Coordinator

Bruce joined the Leadership Council in March 2021. He served as a professional educator for 38 years, having held positions of classroom teacher, principal, counselor, and Director of Development in public and private institutions. He has also developed and implemented staff development on areas of, curriculum, leadership, student achievement, and conflict management. He also serves as an IEP Facilitator with the Illinois State Board of Education.

Bruce earned a master’s degree in counseling from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville in 1985 and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from St Louis University in 2005.

Bruce and his wife live in rural Highland, Illinois. They have three adult children and 8 (and counting) grandchildren.
