Questions that can help your story find focus

Good questions help us find the focus and keep the story short. What is this story about? What do I want my reader to learn? What’s the heart or nut of the story? What is the news? What is the point? What is the theme? What’s the most important question answered by the story? Can I describe [the] story in a single paragraph? A sentence? Six words? Three words?”

-- Roy Peter Clark, senior scholar at The Poynter Institute, excerpt from How to write a good story in 800 words or less (Poynter)

‘You are not alone’: Journalists offer tips for fighting burnout

“News people are human. ... You can feel deeply alone in the work that you're doing, and the stress that you're bearing, and the burnout that you're hiding. And yet the truth of the matter is that you're not alone. ... Take heart: You are not alone and do the best that you can to not silo yourself away from the journalist and from the people who can care for you out of the burnout and the stress that you may be feeling.”

-- Samantha Ragland, vice President, journalism programs at American Press Institute, from National Press Club Institute program on preventing burnout and stress in the newsroom. Watch the panel:
