Celebrating Black History Month

"Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of 'Negro History Week,' the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history."-history.com

Here at Blessed Sacrament School, we have been celebrating with different activities. This past Wednesday, February 21st, we welcomed the Bright Star Theater and their presentation: Jackie Robinson! The students learned about the first black baseball player to cross the color lines in the Major Leagues. We want to give a special thanks to actors Keandra & Terrell for their work and for coming to our school--the students asked many questions about Jackie!

We still have more activities planned for our students, so stay tuned!:

  • Wednesday, 2/28: Black History Month Virtual Event with Stan Tucker at 9:00 am

Congratulations Debbie!

Our Middle School Student Debbie Monahan (7) competed in NCSEF Region 5 this past weekend and took home 1st place in Earth and Environmental Science Junior Level. Her project was titled, "The Effects of Iodine on Saliva in Waxworms for the Biodegradation of Plastics." Debbie wanted to find a solution to the plastic pollution in our oceans. She researched ways of degrading plastics and found that waxworms' saliva has enzymes that degrade plastics such as polyethylene. So she researched what are ways to increase saliva in animals and discovered that iodine increases saliva. Her question was: if waxworms are treated with iodine will they be able to decrease more plastics? She used different solutions of iodine, waxworms, and shredded plastic and found that after 7 days there was less plastic in the waxworms treated with 1:9 mls of iodine. In the future, waxworms can be treated with iodine to increase their saliva and then used to degrade plastic floating in our oceans. She will now go on to compete in the State NCSEF on March 23rd!

Substitute Teachers Needed!

Blessed Sacrament School is looking for substitute teachers to cover classes whenever one of our teachers needs to step away for a day. If you can help, please consider applying for a substitute teacher's position and be added to our on-call list. For questions, please contact Mrs. Kearney at ckearney@bssknights.org.

GOLF 2024

Practices will be at Alamance Country Club on Thursdays starting at 4:00pm with the first practice on 2/22/2024.

Practices will likely finish around 6:30pm contingent on daylight and weather.

The second practice will need to be adjusted to Tuesday 2/27/2024 due to a scheduling conflict.

Golfers can be dropped off at the driving range located behind/to the right of the swimming pool at Alamance Country Club.

Per our agreement with Alamance we will have two coaches at all times to support and supervise.

It will be expected that the golfers follow instructions when on the range, putting green or golf courses so we can enjoy this opportunity to utilize ACC facilities.

Participation

We are limited to the number of golfers we can facilitate at Alamance but our sign up seems to align with the 6-8 golfer cap.

BSS will have two successive tee times between 4:00 - 4:30 on Tuesdays or Thursdays – Typically Thursdays.

The practice tee will be available for four players at a time from ½ an hour prior to the first tee time through the start of the second tee time. Access to the putting green/short game area will be based on availability and should be used in groups of 4 players max per station area.

A coach must be with the team during the entirety of the practice time and will be responsible for checking the team in for times and confirming daily activities.

Competition Cheer 2023-24

UPDATE 01/07/2024:

Dear Cheer Parents,

Shamrock is rapidly approaching, and the girls are working very hard to be ready. We have experienced some challenges this year with our practice schedule and injuries. Starting tomorrow Monday, January 8, we are going to extend practice by 30 minutes, so we will be in the gym from 3:30-5:00.  We are hoping that doing this will keep us from having to have extra practices. We understand that this might not be convenient for everyone, but this is, unfortunately, necessary for the girls to be ready to compete. We are going to be flexible as we know this is coming to you with short notice, but PLEASE, if at all possible, we need your cheerleader to be at practice. At this point, it truly impacts the whole team when one person is missing. If this is simply not an option for you, please let us know.

Additionally, there is an opportunity for the cheerleaders to compete in the Scott Cheer Classic on Feb 24  at 1:00 at IHM (Immaculate Heart Of Mary Catholic School-4145 JOHNSON ST HIGH POINT, NC 27265)

Princial's Message

Dear BSS Family,

Next Thursday is Leap Day! Hope you enjoy this extra day!

Mrs. Gomez

From the Office of Admissions

Dear Parents,

The admissions office is in the process of preparing to send out re-enrollment contracts for the following school year to our returning students/families. There will be an increase in tuition rates for the 2024-2025 school year. Please, review a letter from Mrs. Gomez by CLICKING HERE.

Enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year for returning families will begin on December 18, 2023. All existing families who have not requested financial aid in the past will start to receive an enrollment contract via DocuSign. Space is very limited for some grades and priority will be given to all returning families. Please do not delay in signing a contract once you receive it to secure a spot for your child. After signing, the system will ask you to pay the $265.00 enrollment fee. Review the letter above for deadlines. You will receive an email from FACTS once Mr. Rico sets up your automatic tuition payment drafts if you choose to pay via this option.

If your family is going to apply for the NC Opportunity Scholarship, and your family is a recipient once the NCSEAA notifies families in April 2024, PLEASE let Mr. Rico know so that he can adjust your tuition with the correct award amount (scroll down for more info).

If a family would like to add a new student/sibling, please let Mr. Rico know so he can adjust your contract accordingly. Remember, we will need the following documents for all new students:

  • Copy of the student's birth certificate
  • Copy of the student's immunization records
  • If the family is Catholic, a copy of the student's certificate of baptism.
  • Submit an application, if K-8 APPLY HERE, if a Little Knight, APPLY HERE.

Contracts for families requesting financial aid will be sent after their applications for aid have been processed and a scholarship amount is known. This will be communicated in early March.

If you have any questions about this process, you can contact Mr. Rico.

Corporate Sponsorship Opportunities for the 2023-2024 school year

We have new Corporate Sponsorship Opportunities for the 2023-2024 school year. We would love to help promote your business, while you support our school!

Money raised during the 2022-2023 school year was used for several major and unexpected expenses. We are in the process of replacing our 26-year-old Fire Alarm System at the Main Campus. We also replaced and repaired flooring in several areas of the building. A few rooms also received new paint!

Due to increased enrollment, we purchased 100 new Chromebooks for our students. None of these things would have been possible without the support of our community!
