YLD celebrated Law Day with a Mock Trial for county youth

Approximately 120 eighth-grade students from Franklin County schools attended the event, hosted Friday, May 6th in Courtroom 1 of the Franklin County Courthouse. Students from Chambersburg Area Middle Schools (North and South), Waynesboro Area Middle School, Greencastle Antrim Middle School, and James Buchanan Middle School were in attendance. Members of the Young Lawyers Division served as the prosecution, defense, and witnesses, with students serving as the jury during the mock trial. The Honorable Todd Sponseller presided.

YLD Law Day Chair Nikki Sipe welcomes 8th graders to Law Day

The theme for Law Day 2016 was "Miranda - More than Words". 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the famous Miranda v. Arizona Supreme Court case. Students learned that the Miranda warnings inform a suspect of his or her Fifth Amendment rights and are required to be read to the suspect during a custodial interrogation by the police. Students had the opportunity to participate in a poster contest about this year's theme. The posters were judged on the following criteria: Accurate Representation of the Theme, Creativity, and Visual Appeal. This year's winners are 3rd place Patrick Hicks (JBMS), 2nd place Hayley Shockey (CAMS North), and 1st place Elijah Snyder (CAMS North).

"Law Day gives the Young Lawyers Division a great opportunity to come together to celebrate the reasons we decided to pursue a career in law and to hopefully inspire our next generation of lawyers.  We are excited to teach the students about our legal system.  This year we hope that the students learned the importance of the Fifth Amendment rights and how they are exercised." Stated Law Day Chair, Nicole Sipe.

Gerard Mangieri and David Erhard discussed the importance of the Miranda Warning with the students.

"The members of the Young Lawyers Division enjoy hosting Law Day each year. It's clear from the poster submissions that the students who participated took the time to really learn about this year's theme and the Miranda case. It's always encouraging to see how engaged the students are in the mock trial and how thoughtful they are in their deliberations and questions about the judicial process. It's an event that our members look forward to each year, and we are grateful for the participation of the students and teachers." Said Young Lawyers Division Chair, Tracy Ross.

Judge Sponseller

"Franklin County looks forward to hosting this event annually and it is always encouraging to see the active participation of area students. It is a unique opportunity for students to witness and engage in the legal system and our Young Lawyers do a great job of conveying both the duty and privilege of civic involvement." said FCBA President, Mary Beth Shank.

Law Day was originally the idea of Charles S. Rhyne, who was the legal counsel for President Dwight Eisenhower, as well as the president of the American Bar Association from 1957-1958. In 1958, President Eisenhower declared May 1st as 'Law Day' to remember the struggles of workers in their fight for better wages and working conditions.

In its present day, Law Day is desig
ned to educate people of all ages about the Legal System and to celebrate the American heritage of liberty, justice, and equality. Pennsylvania takes a slightly different approach by focusing on civic education for children. Some county Bar Associations utilize classroom visits and law-related lesson plans to educate children about their legal rights and responsibilities. In Franklin County, the Young Lawyers Division puts on the Mock Trial yearly.

Chad Fixelle gives closing remarks for the defense. The jury found the defendant not guilty.

"Since our last chat..."
"Since our last chat..." is a periodic column in The Causeway by Bar member Barb Townsend.

I've been pestering some of you for titles of books that you would recommend to colleagues as a good read. Last time I did this, I discovered some new authors that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Here's hoping this summer's reading list gives you moments of peace, relaxation and a new appreciation of some aspect of life and literature! (You can click on the pictures to go to Amazon.)

Sam Wiser suggested we read America's Bank: The Epic Struggle to Create the Federal Reserve by Roger Lowentein. Truly a Wall Street conspiracy, the history of the need to have a central bank may shed some interesting light on the current economic and political forces.

I stopped Kristen Hamilton in the hall. She quickly responded that she's enjoying What She Left Behind by Emily Marie Wiseman. This fictional account of a collection of written musings by an involuntary inmate hig
hlights some of the issues of state hospitals for the allegedly insane. There are two other recent books with the same title which are similarly well received, so maybe you'll enjoy a trilogy of the same title.

Forrest Myers acknowledged that he was reading the series by Malcolm Gladwell. Some of the titles are Outliers: The Story of Success, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, and The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference. If you like biography, Forrest suggests Ken Gormley's Archibald Cox.

Steve Smith suggests another biography which he noted was worth the time: The Last Lion: William Spencer Churchill, Defender of the Realm by William Mancester and Paul Reid. This is also part of three books, which are easy reads about the early part of the last century and an unique leader.

Ed Beck recommends Carlo D'Este's version: Warlord: A Life of Winston Churchill. Ed also enjoyed Patton: A Genius for War by Mr. D'Este, who is a careful researcher.

Confessions of Congressman X
by Congressman X is occupying part of Clint Barkdoll's spare time.

Ed Steckle quickly suggested that a good read was Papa Hemmingway: A Personal Memoir by A. E. Hotchner. On the lighter side, he suggested the historical novels by Diana Gabaldon, The Outlander series.

David McCullough has written about The Johnstown Flood, 1776, John Adams, and The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge, among other works. Mary Beth Shank, however, recommends his new book, The Wright Brothers, and the surprising portrait of their sister, the indispensable Katharine.

Tiffany Watson suggests a pleasure read
: Wally Lamb's I Know This Much is True. The story line is about twin brothers and their separate paths through growth in Connecticut.

Tracy Ross is enjoying Carry On Warrior by Glennon Doyle Melton. This is a laugh out loud sequence of observations about universal experiences. The sub title reveals that the book is about embracing your beautiful, messy life.

Phil Cosentino noted that John Grisham's Rogue Lawyer is still a relaxing read, although he felt that it was not quite up to the writing he's come to expect from fellow attorney, Mr. Grisham. Instead, he was happy to recommend All the Light We Cannot See, a prize winning novel by Anthony Doerr about a blind French girl and a German boy, both out of their safe places, in World War II France.

Judge Sponseller enjoys the 33 1/3 Series. He specifically mentioned Fleetwood Mac's T
usk and R.E.M.'s Murmur, but a quick trip to Amazon revealed that there's a favorite just waiting.

The Rain King
by David L. Felts got a kudo from Kevin Taccino, but he warns that the reader needs to enjoy fantasy.

If you enjoy sports and basketball specifically, Tim Wilmot is reading Bleeding Orange by Jim Boeheim. Characteristically, the book suggests that referees are blind...

Mallary Willatt was quick to mention The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson, a novel about North Korea, and Wolf in a White Van by John Darnielle, a fantasy game that has real consequences.

I caught up with Steve Coccorese.
He likes The Big Short by Michael Lewis, a novel which highlights the recent crash of real estate derivatives.

Gerard Mangieri said that he enjoyed Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn once he was able to suspend his disbelief that Amy could continue to succeed with her behavior and not be caught.

Meghan O'Reilly Karasic took the time to mention Tea Obreht's The Tiger's Wife, a retelling of the legend from the Jungle Book through the eyes of a young, overworked doctor.

Daniel Conlon, at Salzmann Hughes, recounted that Divergent Paths: The Academy and The Judiciary is a worthy read on the widening gap in the legal profession by Seventh Circuit Judge Richard A. Posner.
