"Since our last chat..."
"Since our last chat..." is a periodic column in The Causeway by Bar member Barb Townsend. This month's article is by Kristen Hamilton.
The Social Committee of the Franklin County Bar Association arranged the summer picnic for June 6, 2015 at the home of Phil and Kathy Cosentino. The picnic had a dual purpose, an opportunity to celebrate the career of retiring judge, Douglas W. Herman, and an opportunity to socialize.
According to Amelia Ambrose, our Executive Director, there were 100 people planning to attend. This year the tent was enlarged as the barn was for dancing and blue grass music. Guests began arriving at 4:00 p.m., to the hunger inducing smell of chicken being grilled. In addition to the chicken, there were pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, scalloped potatoes, and coleslaw for the main meal.
Excess dinners were packaged as takeouts. I did not hear about left over cupcakes, though. Abby Salawage, Esq., proved again that she has a skill other than attorney. Abby provided four different varieties of cupcakes: Oreo cupcakes, lemon raspberry cupcakes, and the highly praised lime margarita cupcakes with tequila and chocolate stout cupcakes with Guinness. She finished her dessert display with a topper of a bass coming out of a pond. Everyone commented both on her cupcakes and the blue grass band.
Kristin Hamilton, Esq., once again had the event well organized. Kristen also decorated the tables and provided a favor for guests in the form of potted plants. The down home theme was in keeping with Senior Judge Herman's request for a blue grass band ... and there were kudos for the Blue Stone that provided over two hours of music after dinner. [I had a reliable source advise that President Judge Van Horn was dancing with her husband to the music].
Phil Cosentino, Esq., provided games again. There were attorneys and family struggling over corn hole, horse shoes, jenga and bocce. Phil confirmed that Kristen's husband is quite skilled at bocce.
As is customary, to honor retiring judges, the bar association asks the judge to name a charity. Instead of monetary gifts to the honoree, the members are asked to donate to the named charity. We are honored that the Honorable Douglas W. Herman chose to request that donations be made to the Franklin County Bar Association Foundation. The amount donated so far exceeds $8,400.
It is not too late to make a donation in honor of Doug. Of course, if you are on an arbitration panel, your fee may be donated as well. In fact, any donation to the foundation is not only gratefully received, but is tax deductible.
Not all gifts were serious: Clint Barkdoll, Esq., on behalf of the bar presented to Senior Judge Herman a plaque destined to be applied to his shed where he keeps his fishing equipment at his and Kathy's beach house. It reads "Judge's Chambers". He also got a new fishing hat. The event was shared with the extended Herman family.
Most of the comments about the event have been extraordinarily positive. Good job, Social Committee!
