A Note from Scott and Marsha
October 31, 2019
Have you been by recently and seen this man? He is a partner in my crimes. This is John. John is our FGS Grounds Keeper. Really it is far beyond a grounds keeper. He does everything actually. He is a builder, designer, repairer, photographer, animal mover, idea maker, etc. He improves everything he touches. He is amazing. Really. I come up with an idea and he implements it. He troubleshoots. And forget his skill set. If you think that is amazing, you should see his heart. Every conversation I have with him takes me on a personal journey of how to improve personally and reminds me to always see the very best in others. I don't know that you can find a more caring, generous man and it is a privilege to have him at FGS.

Do you know what is even more awesome? His daughter, Sunshine, works at the Garden Center. Did I say Sunshine? You bet I did and I want that name! She assists at the Garden Center and every conversation I have with her reveals so much knowledge! She is equally as caring as her dad and multi-talented as well. And when she wanted to learn how to use the loader, I knew we could be friends.

I saw one afternoon John riding the stand-up mower and she was on the golf cart next to him. They were conversing and then all of sudden, they took off "racing." It warmed my heart to see father and daughter enjoying the day and having fun in what they were doing. It made me miss my dad as we would have done the exact same thing.

I'm sure you will see them around and I know if you stop and say hello, you will experience what I do every day. I mean, who gets to work with amazing people among living, beautiful things? We are one blessed team.
JUDY'S HOUSEPLANT PICK
Haworthia gets its turn in the spotlight this week. The cat-friendly succulents are small and low-growing. They are very easy to take care of as long as they get the right amount of light and water. Succulents prefer bright, indirect light for at least a few hours a day. Only water when soil is completely dry. Water deeply, but make sure they are never sitting in water.
EVERGREEN PERENNIALS
Evergreen perennials are some of our favorite plants around here. They provide beautiful color all year long. For shade or part-shade spots, consider Heuchera, also known as 'Coral Bells'. They come in many different beautiful colors and sizes. Heuchera is just one of many evergreen perennials. Ferns, vines, ajuga, and penstemon are other perennials we recommend.
DWARF BURNING BUSH
The Dwarf Burning Bush is aptly named for its fiery red foliage in the fall, but don't let the "dwarf" part fool you. This deciduous shrub can grow to 6-8 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide. It is very easy to keep trimmed back, but wait until the leaves have dropped in the late fall to prune back. In the spring and summer months, you will enjoy lovely bright green foliage!
A CHANCE TO GIVE BACK
CORA is an organization that works tirelessly to feed those with food insecurity in Chatham County. They also provide a service called SNACK! that provides food for children in summer months who usually get free-reduced meals during the school year. You can help provide for these families in need by donating items to our Food Drive. Please donate items like canned fruits and vegetables, healthy pantry items, or paper products. Find a more detailed list of needs here. Bring your donations starting tomorrow, November 1. We will match all of your donations and deliver the items on December 2. Please help us care for our community in this way!
