Welcome to the winter edition of The Innovation Edge where we bring to you exciting updates from CEWIT about the rapidly evolving world of technological and social innovations.
And as we bid farewell to another transformative year in technology, I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on the incredible journey CEWIT has taken over the past twelve months.
The new year began with Hack@CEWIT 2023 returning live the first week of March where CEWIT hosted more than 150 students over a 44-hour period, which culminated in a half-day inaugural Community Showcase. Student hackers explained their hack projects, Stony Brook University first-responders demonstrated their technology, and CEWIT researchers, industry partners and incubator companies showcased their innovations. All of which were well received as was the hot chocolate and snacks served to the 350 community members and students.
In April, New York City announced Stony Brook University as the anchor institution of the New York Climate Exchange (“The Exchange”) which will spearhead a new 400,000-square-foot climate change research and education hub. Prior to this announcement, Stony Brook University was awarded a grant to develop the Clean Energy Equity Index (CEEI) with partners IBM and the United Nations Development Programme. Known as the first collaborative project under the Exchange, the CEEI will be developed into an open software tool to support communities in their transition from fossil fuel energy production to clean energy.
In late spring, CEWIT hosted a virtual workshop entitled: AI for Business Optimization. The 250+ attendees heard from AI experts on how to increase operational efficiency, gain analytics-based insights, and improve real-time customer experience. The summer introduced a collaboration with CEWIT incubator Sunrise Technology to host four weeks of machine learning and robotics camp that drew high school students to CEWIT from all over the country. CEWIT also partnered with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to launch the joint Talking Tech webinar and has since hosted a second webinar in the series.
The annual CEWIT conference was held Nov. 16 featuring a keynote, plenary speakers and three panels on technologies for developing healthcare, sustainability and cybersecurity solutions. In December, CEWIT showcased a series of podcasts with CEWIT conference invited guests such as Mary Strain, Business Development Manager at Amazon Web Services and Dr. Carl W. Lejuez, Executive Vice President and Provost of Stony Brook University. And let me personally thank Softheon and Zebra Technologies for their long-time sponsorship support of our conference and student hackathon, along with being a partner for numerous joint projects and internship programs.
It has been truly a rewarding year, with the center growing both in terms of faculty and student involvement across the Stony Brook University campus and the numbers of new industry partners and community engagements. We look forward to another exciting and productive new year and want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support.
CEWIT is here for you and always ready to embrace opportunities for collaboration and partnership. Reach out to us and let us work together to bring the Innovation Edge to our society and usher in a healthier, safer and more sustainable future.
Have a great Holiday Season and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Regards,
