Top Takeaways from “Leveraging PR in Celebrity Endorsements & Influencer Marketing” OCPRSA Event
Consumers can see through ads. According to last week’s OCPRSA “Leveraging PR in Celebrity Endorsements and Influencer Marketing” panelists, that’s one reason influencers have been gaining stride in promoting products and services–they’re authentic. Here are some top takeaways from the event:
It’s not always a numbers game. Micro influencers (influencers with a smaller follower base) are also highly targeted.
You’re really working with the influencer’s team, and that can make or break the experience. After a bad experience with a team that was unresponsive and late with deliverables, although the influencer was great, the company opted to not work with that influencer again.
Though formal contracts take more time to go through legal, having them can assure that the influencer remains accountable and follows through, and adding clauses about potential legal activity to protect the brand and campaign–since you can’t always control the influencer’s actions or choices–can be a good idea.
Panelists also talked about how to convince decision makers to work with influencers, which metrics matter, and how to find the right influencer for your brand or campaign. Moderated by OCPRSA’s Gina Ray, APR of ABBYY, panelists included Johnnie Mansfield, owner of JM2 Marketing, Jonny Zeller, Director and Storyverse architect at Cloud Niners, and OCPRSA’s Victoria Lim, Senior Manager of Executive and Employee Communications at Experian.
The event was held at SOCIAL in Costa Mesa and photography was provided by Forge Media Group. Learn about upcoming events and sponsorship opportunities here in the Inbox or visit OCPRSA.org.

Member Spotlight: Q&A with Mega Jewell,
Director of Integrated Communications, MEGA
This week we meet Mega Jewell, a master storyteller and social strategist returning to Orange County after broadcast work took her to Northern California and beyond—in fact, Mega is currently serving on the Board of Directors with PRSA Silicon Valley. This CSUF alum has served as a morning show anchor in Chico and FOX affiliate reporter in Portland. Welcome back to OC, Mega—so glad you’re here!
Q: Please tell us about you, Mega! Your job, etc.
I'm a former TV reporter turned communications specialist. I love working with clients who are improving the world - one vertical at a time. Typically, folks are really immersed in their world that they are challenged to tell their story from 10,000 feet above and get others to care. That's where I come in. Telling their story most effectively through emotions and results. The mediums evolve (social, newsletter, PR campaigns), but the heart of the story is a constant.
Q: What brought you to OCPRSA?
I recently moved to Orange County and currently serve on the board of PRSA-Silicon Valley. I would love to meet people face-to-face and invest in the current and future generations...in my neighborhood.
Q: What’s your favorite piece of advice for PR professionals?
Make it easy for the user. Understand their challenges, and feed the story on a silver platter.

Both clients were featured on Fox 26 Houston's "The Nightcap" for Women of SXSW. Meanwhile, Natasha also had two other clients: Antonio Neville, also known as HeyTonyTV, who was on a fully paid Disney World Campaign, and Terrell Wade, also known as TheWadeEmpire, who attended a Disney red carpet event.
