Member Spotlight: Alyssa Jago

Member Spotlight: Q&A with Alyssa Jago,

Program Specialist, City of Irvine

Please extend a hearty welcome to Alyssa Jago, one of OCPRSA’s newest members. This communications professional brings broadcast news and government relations expertise to her latest role here in Orange County. Meet Alyssa!

Q: Please tell us about you! Your job, etc.

I work for the City of Irvine in the Public Information Office. As a former news reporter, I officially made the switch to the PR side in 2017 and have loved every second of it! My work focuses on internal communications, sharing organizational news and announcements with colleagues, and external communications, sharing city news and announcements with our community of more than 300,000 residents. My background as a reporter has allowed me to be involved in several video and social media projects as the “voice and face of Irvine,” which is pretty awesome! I love meeting new people, learning about their backgrounds, and discovering how this helped shaped them into the person they are today.

Q: What brought you to the OCPRSA?

My supervisor recommended I join the OCPRSA as a way to encourage professional development and network across agencies and organizations. I have already discovered the benefits to being a part of such a large organization with so many members who have the same goals and outlook on their career path.

Q: What’s your favorite piece of advice for PR professionals?

My favorite piece of advice for PR professionals goes back to a rule learned in grammar school that still applies today: KISS (Keep IT Simple, Stupid (or Sweetie)). In this day and age, people are consuming or breezing past news and announcements so quickly. They need information in a format that is digestible and can be perceived within seconds, whether through word, text, sound or video. I try to remember this rule in my daily work and not be overwhelmed by details that can slow your message or lose viewers, readers or listeners.
